Which do you think it is the most difficult game you've ever played?
put them here and maybe we'll give them a shot ;)

@mastermetal777: battletoads yeah good one!
x3 reunion and dark souls come to mind but also alien isolation. either that game is really unforgiving or i'm just rubbish at it. i've not heard anyone else complain so probably the latter ;) i started playing on hard, went down to normal, then easy and was still dying a lot so now i'm playing it on novice lol. i think if you're so rubbish you have to play on novice they should let you swap and play as the alien
Lile everyone said, Battletoads. I actually managed to legitimately complete Battletoads on the NES at a friend's house when I was still a brat and GB, as well as Battletoads/Double Dragon, although Battletoads in Ragnarok's World was where I failed miserably. I never played the arcade :-(
If you mean hard but still playable, I'd say Battletoads. If you mean impossible to get past the opening sequence and unplayable to the point that you unsuccessfully demand your money back from the rental store, then Dragon's Lair on the NES.
Well, hard doesn't necessarily mean good and there are gameplay design tropes that existed in the early years of games. Pretty much every Infocom text adventure was damned near impossible to beat without assistance. Hell, in the Zork games you could take actions in the very beginning of the game that would prevent you from being able to beat the game once you get about 90% of the way through (and it wouldn't tell you that you did it or even what you did wrong). That's a pretty ridiculous example of difficulty. The Kings Quest games were also filled with many opportunities for instant death.
Many of the old 8-bit Nintendo side scrollers were damned hard. The NES Ninja Gaiden games, for example.

I don't know about other battletoads games but to be fair battletoads/double dragon wasn't that hard.
Wouldn't say Darksouls. Once you know the patterns: most boss battles tend to be fairly easy. The older (snes) days use to be very difficult. Especially with the lack of saving ability.
For me: at least with recent games. This dude was a pain in the ass on the hardest difficulty.
@uninspiredcup:
Was he....... that fight was so scripted it warped the sense of challenge..... I was playing it on easy and I barely understood what was going on..... was I losing winning... was I winning ? I just didn't know !
Im gonna go through it again on Medium.
Battletoads.. nice try, but not the toughest game. This one:

Isn't that just Mega Man? I've beaten all of those. Battletoads was much more difficult. Both are amazing games.
So maybe we can have a separate list for games that aren't NES? Of course I'm just being bitchy anyway as I wouldn't even try and beat most of those games. Hardest thing I've ever done I guess was 9999 on MarioKart Wii.
As I always say when this topic comes up Shadow of the Beast on Sega Genesis and as always nobody will know what I'm talking about.
@Azre103: Draognball Z Budokai 3, try to beat Omega Shenron on lvl 99. That's hard! Also there is actually one boss that's almost impossible to beat unless you manage to use a certain tactic in the game

nope, it was one of the first games i had for the amiga ;) i have great memories of that game and yes it was really hard.
tbf most games from that era were bloody hard though. even stuff aimed at kids like bart vs the space mutants were really difficult, or at least that's how i remember them

Yeah, all the Amiga side scrollers were mind numbingly tough. The Amiga was so cool looking back then. I wished I had one at the time.

i feel for you dude. so you skipped the amiga and went straight for a pc? those early sierra adventure games were at least as equally difficult as any side scrollers at the time. i'm not sure whether games from that era were really that difficult or we were just kids at the time getting used to gaming
Ninja Gaiden, Battletoads, Ghost'n'goblins were stupidly hard, I remember having a very hard time going past a few level of GI Joe on the NES. MegaMan for me was quite easy.
That would be Ninja Gaiden 2. Mainly because that game is cheap as hell on the 360. I would also say fighting games(like street fighter) in general, I'm not very good at them. Don't play them much because of that, don't know if it counts either. Maybe if I dedicated some actual time to a few competitive fighters i would be able to master them, however since they are so boring and annoying to me, I don't even pay attention to fighters.
No doubt some of the old school games were so hard to beat, but they aren't nearly as hard for me today, such as Battle Toads, Ghosts and Goblins, Contra (no extra lives cheat), etc.
I'd have to say Ninja Gaiden II on the hardest difficulty. Damn that crap is hard.
not counting nes games (cause they are cheaper then they are hard) ninja gaiden 2 (360) was insane on the harder difficulties
im pretty sure the 1st one was too but i never played that one on the harder diffs
anywho i had to give up beating ninja gaiden 2 on master ninja
