The Zork games were awesome but -insanely- hard. I also really liked Deadline because it had characters that moved from room to room with their own AI and it was like a real detective story. The Douglas Adams stuff was also awesome, like Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and Leather Goddesses of Phobos. There were so many good ones.

I always loved Beyond Zork. The lite roleplaying mechanics led to some great thinking-outside-of-the-box puzzle solutions.

The were all impossibly difficult, but Deadline had the neatest concept. I like a good "detective" story and a game that puts you into that role effectively even more.
