Agreed, though the Project Zero (Fatal Frame) games are equally as, if not more so, creepy and disturbing than the Silent Hill series. Theres something about Asian horror thats more scary and horrifying than the often blunter, more in your face style of western horror.

Silent Hill series of course.

I would like to meet the main brain behind them, just to see what makes him/her tick!

I havent had the pleasure of playing on consoles so from the PC games that I have played,

F.E.A.R - I literally screamed at couple of places :(

Condemned - Great atmosphere and melee combat...loved it.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. The combination of the visual styIe with the ominous music and the freakish creature design has freaked me out on several occasions... and I've only played up to the point where you first go into the X18 Lab right after leaving the Bar.

Resident Evil series is pretty scary. Condemned: Criminal Origins is one of the scariest games I've played. But the scariest game I've played(and I think this is a bit overlooked) is The Suffering. I was scared almost every second of that games from the flashbacks to the monsters and voices and disturbing imagery that just flash across the screen.

Yeh the lil girl in FEAR creeped me out. Silent Hill never really did it for me. It didnt scare me anywhere near as much as the Resident Evil games did. I never played The Suffering. Did anyone ever playForbidden Siren? was supposed to be ultra scary but i never got round to buying it.

Resident Evil is mostly shock horror though, like monsters jumping at you from no where after a period of silence, it gets obvious after a while.

Silent Hill is another story, it's horror comes from the fact that the monsters are so freaky and disgusting, you just get frightened by looking at them, and they stay with you even after you finish the game, my little brother who was 15 at the time played 2 and said he kept seeing nurses in the corner of his room... FOR 2 WEEKS!

As always, it is Silent Hill 3 (PS2). A slow-paced game with a female character equipped with a very dim flashlight walking along dark, bloody, rusty, silent corridors with moaning unknown creatures in the distance coupled with no BGM and with gritty graphics.

Silent Hill 2 and 3 are awesome/creepy games. They have awesome atmoshpere and just overall amazing fear effects. Resident evil 2 and 3 are scary but not as much as silent hill games IMO. The suffering was also another scary game. The second one not as much as the first though. condemned is now on that list, that game is freaky as hell. I havent played F.E.A.R. yet but i am sure that is scary as well.

Phantasmagoria used to give me nightmares.

Another scary one is Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners Of The Earth, I was so freaked out after I escaped from the townspeople in the second chapter that I had to pause the game to take a breath and let my heart stop pumping uncontrollably.

I agree with many others that Doom 3 is a very scary game. I would be talking to someone on the phone while playing, and still scream like a little girl when things popped out. Another frightening game (I know this sounds uber-retarded) is Mike Tyson's Punch Out for the NES. When I was about 5 or 6, my brother would play the game in the BASEMENT and I would watch him. I was, and still am, scared of Mike Tyson's face when it pops up at the introduction of the game. The only other people that scare me are Bald Bull and King Hippo.

Man, I feel retarded now:?

What game would everyone agree on that has the most scary moment? I mean, like when things pop out at you or something unexpected happens. Not just a creepy environment. I think the scariest moment for me was on Resident Evil 4, when I was walking through a kitchen. All of a sudden, a flaming dude crashed through the standing oven thing, and I had to change my pants.

Penumbra: Overture. The begginging was very creepy, and the fact when you're hinding from monsters you cannot look too long at them or your guy panics. What was really the besst part though was the atmosphere. Few things are scarier than the feeling of being utterly alone.

cant believe that i forgot to mention Eternal Darkness on Gamecube. I'll never forget tryng to get that fly of my telly (was in the game) and also when i couldnt quite understand why the tv *turned off. There was a scary scene in the bathroom aswell. That game was FREAKY! funny how the *nice console produced such a scary game. Gamecube was pretty awesome.

Can't say I've played too many scary games. Most of the ones that I hear are scary from others maybe make me jump once or something. The only geniunely freaky game that I've really played is System Shock 2.

Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2, and Silent Hill 3. Then theres Fatal Frame 2 which pushes things even further (in terms of fear factor).

I would agree with the Doom series. Hearing the grunts in the distance, and then turning around and seeing something attacking you never gets old. I also remember being startled at the first time I saw that huge beast with the missle launcher for an arm.

Amen to that...

Also, there is a video on youtube.com that you all should watch. Just search for "Doom 3 in the dark" and it should come up. Probably one of the funniest videos I've ever seen.

The scariest game I have ever played was Condemned: Criminal Origins. There were times that I just had to put that game down because I was scared out of my pants everytime I rounded a corner.

As for F.E.A.R., eh. Not so scary. The first few times I saw Alma I did almost crap myself, but after a little while I found the scares to die down quite a bit. There is some truly great action in F.E.A.R. and I will be waiting for Project Origin, but there isn't too much in the way of horror in that series.

I don't get spooked easy, but I'll mention parts of games that did.

1. Fatal Frame 1: The ghost children you had to fight.....especially the damn "hide an' seek" child

2. Silent Hill: The music that would randomly play in the background would make my skin crawl.

3. RE2: The lasher that jumps through the 2 way mirror.

4. Fatal Frame 1&2: That "heartbeat" sound you hear when a ghost appears. When you cant see or tell where it is it freaks you out a little.

5. Eternal Darkness: The Infamous bathtub scene.

the first three resident evil games (DC/REmake Re2 re3) are pretty scary all in unique ways but REmake really has the jump factor because you never know when those reanimated zombies are gonna get you.

This will seem odd but "UFO : Enemy Unknown" made me feel really uncomfortable.

Silent-Hal

Part of why I'm not quite as excited for Silent Hill 5, western made horror being shoehorned into a traditionally Japanese developed horror game. My vote would have to go to Fatal Frame (as a series), that game could make me get up and turn on the lights.
