Silent Hilll and Silent Hill 2, of course.Lothenon
Agreed, though the Project Zero (Fatal Frame) games are equally as, if not more so, creepy and disturbing than the Silent Hill series. Theres something about Asian horror thats more scary and horrifying than the often blunter, more in your face style of western horror.
Silent Hill series of course.
I would like to meet the main brain behind them, just to see what makes him/her tick!
Yeh the lil girl in FEAR creeped me out. Silent Hill never really did it for me. It didnt scare me anywhere near as much as the Resident Evil games did. I never played The Suffering. Did anyone ever playForbidden Siren? was supposed to be ultra scary but i never got round to buying it.
Resident Evil is mostly shock horror though, like monsters jumping at you from no where after a period of silence, it gets obvious after a while.
Silent Hill is another story, it's horror comes from the fact that the monsters are so freaky and disgusting, you just get frightened by looking at them, and they stay with you even after you finish the game, my little brother who was 15 at the time played 2 and said he kept seeing nurses in the corner of his room... FOR 2 WEEKS!
Phantasmagoria used to give me nightmares.
Another scary one is Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners Of The Earth, I was so freaked out after I escaped from the townspeople in the second chapter that I had to pause the game to take a breath and let my heart stop pumping uncontrollably.
I agree with many others that Doom 3 is a very scary game. I would be talking to someone on the phone while playing, and still scream like a little girl when things popped out. Another frightening game (I know this sounds uber-retarded) is Mike Tyson's Punch Out for the NES. When I was about 5 or 6, my brother would play the game in the BASEMENT and I would watch him. I was, and still am, scared of Mike Tyson's face when it pops up at the introduction of the game. The only other people that scare me are Bald Bull and King Hippo.
Man, I feel retarded now:?
cant believe that i forgot to mention Eternal Darkness on Gamecube. I'll never forget tryng to get that fly of my telly (was in the game) and also when i couldnt quite understand why the tv *turned off. There was a scary scene in the bathroom aswell. That game was FREAKY! funny how the *nice console produced such a scary game. Gamecube was pretty awesome.
The scariest game I have ever played was Condemned: Criminal Origins. There were times that I just had to put that game down because I was scared out of my pants everytime I rounded a corner.
As for F.E.A.R., eh. Not so scary. The first few times I saw Alma I did almost crap myself, but after a little while I found the scares to die down quite a bit. There is some truly great action in F.E.A.R. and I will be waiting for Project Origin, but there isn't too much in the way of horror in that series.
I don't get spooked easy, but I'll mention parts of games that did.
1. Fatal Frame 1: The ghost children you had to fight.....especially the damn "hide an' seek" child
2. Silent Hill: The music that would randomly play in the background would make my skin crawl.
3. RE2: The lasher that jumps through the 2 way mirror.
4. Fatal Frame 1&2: That "heartbeat" sound you hear when a ghost appears. When you cant see or tell where it is it freaks you out a little.
5. Eternal Darkness: The Infamous bathtub scene.

SickSinsEnvy
the first three resident evil games (DC/REmake Re2 re3) are pretty scary all in unique ways but REmake really has the jump factor because you never know when those reanimated zombies are gonna get you.
scary game that made me jump
1 Resident evil when zombie dog jump through hallway windows
2 Resident evil 2 the licker jumping through two way Mirror
3 the haunted mansion in silent hill when dummy pop out of nowhere
4 eternal darkness when the volume on my tv started going down
5 the cat in the lockroom in first silent hill
Silent hill, fatal frame were both scary series and perhaps im just a wuss but Thief:deadly shadows scared me, especially the asylum parts

Silent-Hal
Part of why I'm not quite as excited for Silent Hill 5, western made horror being shoehorned into a traditionally Japanese developed horror game. My vote would have to go to Fatal Frame (as a series), that game could make me get up and turn on the lights.
