Yeah I downloaded it this morning, dl'ed pretty freakin' fast. I haven't tried it yet but will later today. This game didn't need a demo to convince me to purchase it but it'll be a great way to kill some time until the game comes out.

It comes to PSN on Feb. 5th. I'll end up buying it on PS3 anyways. Mainly because Microsoft insists on charging for demos.

Pretty much what I expected. Feels very much like RE4 in HD which is a good thing. I didn't particularly like the controls on the 360 though, perhaps becasue I played 4 on the PS2. I'll download the demo again on PSN next week and then buy the PS3 version.

Dude, you are acting like only Microsoft pulls stuff like that. Did you forget about Killzone 2 so soon? Everybody has forgotten that demos exist to sell games, not the other way around.

Not only that but you can still get the demo for free off of Marketplace you only have to wait a week to do so.

I just finished playing through the "public assembly" level and while I did enjoy it, I already have a few complaints...

1. Forced co-op, even in single-player. Online with a friend is sure to be a blast, but micromanaging Sheva yourself in the middle of battle is annoying as hell. While her AI is far from horrible, escorting Ashley in RE4 was a simple matter of toggling between "wait" and "follow me". However, I'll be the first to admit that Sheva certainly wins in the eye-candy department.

2. Melee attacks are next to useless. One of the most exciting (and ammo conserving) features in RE4 was quickly-but-carefully selecting a single target amongst a crowd to shoot in the face, rushing up to them while surrounded by enemies with weapons in mid-swing, then executing a round-house kick at just the right milisecond to send everyone flying. Chris Redfields measily little punches, on the other hand, only manage to clear one or two bad guys at a time. To me this is a major, MAJOR loss as far as gameplay mechanics are concerned.

3. Merely picking up an item now involves a seperate animation. I realize this had to be done for the sake of real-time co-op, but it does create problems, most obviously the fact that you now have to stop running to grab that much needed herb or ammo box, effectively discouraging you from doing so, but it also intereferes with the aforementioned melee attacks. I already can't count how many times I desperately needed to knock an infected out of the way, when instead Chris decided it was more important to stop and pick up a lucky penny.

4. The new default control scheme. Sure the fact that its clunky and convoluted is no problem for those of us who opt for the classic RE4 layout, but the fact that its the default scheme in this demo is causing several newbies to assume that's how the game is meant to be played, and just hours after the demo's official release, various forums are already filled with complaints of how awful the whole thing is. Now does this do justice to the immediate successor of a game that's been universally praised for its fluid and intuitive controls? The way it stands now, the uninitiated think its just a third-person shooter where you can't move while aiming. Listen up, kiddies: The primary face button shoots, not the trigger. And the right stick? Just pretend it isn't there. You'll get the hang of it in no time.

I think that about covers it, for now. I will still, of course, be purchasing this game on day one, but the gripes are definitely there.

First of all, RE4's controls weren't really intuitive either, as they were the typical, tank controls of previous RE games, just with a different camera angle. It worked within the game, but given the nature of how RE5 feels, more mobility and ease of mobility would've been preferred in my book, especially because it feels even more counter intuitive than RE4's controls.

The proper response to when a control scheme isn't working is not to tell people, "Listen, it's not the game's fault you can't play it right." I mean, that's the kind of response the developers of Lair gave.

Honestly, RE5 SHOULD control more like a traditional 3rd person shooter, and not have silly design elements like a run button, tank controls, and a complete inability to move when you are aiming a handgun. I'd take even some slow walking over what the game is offering in those circumstances.

I played both levels, each one is short; I've played the first level a second time around to get familiar with the controls and then the game clicked for me. The game is just like RE4 but I found the controls better then RE4's aiming and easier to use, not as clunky as the GC controller. Graphically the game is probably the best I've seen (I haven't played Killzone 2 beta yet), character details is amazing you'll see 4-5 enemies surround you and on the first level things get pretty intense as wave after wave of enemy keep coming even though it takes only 3 bullets to kill an enemy. I'm pretty sure the retail version will be harder, the game is buttery smooth, it could probably be running at 60fps.

Enemies leave ammo, items such as gold that you can pick up or pass it to Sheva; you have the option to request an item from Sheva and vice versa. I found Sheva very useful when she has healing items as she'll heal you right away when you're very wounded, then rather go to item menus and look for a herb while I get stab by a mob of zombies. Chris can run by pressing forward on the left stick + A which is useful, holding LT + RT is to fire your weapon and LB+RT to swing your huge ass knife, while swing several times you'll see the option to perform an uppercut, you can also stomp downed enemies ala Gears of War. When Sheva is in trouble, the B button will appear, with a single press of the button Chris launches a big punch that sends enemies flying.

The game is pretty much RE4, but on the first level things get hectic as there's more enemies and they can run. A minor gripe is when I started the demo, I thought the camera was too close to Chris, I'd just wish you had more view to see but after a minute its fine, I think Chris is too big that's probably the main reason :P

Hehehe. That was definitely a Freudian slip. You know you want to play Final Fantasy. You just keep saying otherwise to yourself while you cosplay Cloud every night before you go to sleep, hugging your Tifa shaped pillow. Shiva is a summon spell from the Final Fantasy series.

I have FF7 tatooed on my forehead as a reminder never to play Final Fantasy again. I can live with the pain, the social ridicule and the fact that I can barely stand looking myself in the mirror which causes some curious shaving mishaps, but anything is better than playing Final Fantasy.

Played the demo on XBL and it's solid stuff. I don't know if it would have been possible knowing that it could spoil the experience of the full game, but I was hoping for the demo to introduce more elements that were new to RE. Because even though it plays great a looks amazing, it feels pretty much like RE4 with a partner. And what happened to those indoor and outdoor blinding effects Inafune said before? I also had to get used to the controls again since the 360's controls were changed to "Gears" shooting and picking up items/actions feel a bit different. Probably has to do with the focus on the X button and playing RE4 on the PS2, the x on the controls for the 360 and PS are set differently. Definitely getting this game knowing it should be able to offer at least a handful of thrills, surprises and epic moments. I hope it surpasses my expectations :)

Really, is it so much to ask to be able to move and shoot at the same time? Don't you think that jet fighter ace/master chemist Chris Redfield would have come across this skill at some point in his training?

Also..in this age of analog sensitivity, let's just put the run button in its grave. Full tilt is run, slight tilt is walk - easy. Besides, it's not like you're gonna walk anywhere in this game. Not at that speed - you'd catch an rrod before you got anywhere. You might be able to sell me on a walk button, but why require a button for something i'm probably going to be doing 99% percent of the time I spend moving? Why not at least make run the default speed or include the choice to do so?

Of course, none of this is new to the franchise...these are longtime gripes....I had just naively hoped that Capcom might embrace some of the finer evolutions in shooter gameplay that have come about in the past decade. The newer control schemes are also pretty much a failure..best to just use option A. Capcom's attempt to appease shooter fans served only to illustrate their ignorance with respect to said audience's preferences.

Really liked the co-op, though. I just hope the story elements aren't as thin as last time.

Ish_basic

Those ginormous muscles of his must be weighing him down.

I won't be able to play the demo until the PS3 one comes out or when I get the 360 back from the repair shop. I'm sure this has been addressed before, but my biggest concern with this game lies with your AI partner. Some of the gameplay videos I've seen give me the impression that Sheva looks to be a bit of a hindrance, what with her using up ammo health and getting herself killed gives you a game over. I suppose you can't tell her to go hide in a dumpster?

Co-op sounds like a blast, but for those of you playing along with the AI Sheva, is she competent or an annoyance?

While you're running away when you're being swarmed or getting in trouble you press the B button for Sheva to follow you. I found her competent, sure she gets grabbed once in a while when it happens there'll be a sign topress the B button to help her; she will sometimes do the same for you.

I really wasn't too worried about Sheva after the demo. Actually, she was kinda bailing me out more often than the other way around, and she always handed me ammo when I was low, even if I didn't ask. She seemed pretty johnny-on-the-spot. It actually worked out at times so that she took one direction and I had the other..more than once I turned only to see the splatter of brains from an enemy that I didn't even know was behind me.

That said..you're gonna need to move around a lot to avoid being overwhelmed (especially since headshots from the pistol seem to mean absolutely nothing)...but whenever I did, she was always right on my heels.

I don't know how she'll hold up throughout the entirety of the campaign, but it's already clear that she won't be a total brick. And quite frankly, even if she were..I'm used to friendly AI being anything but...after playing through CoD games on veteran, I don't expect anything from my "allies," so I'm rarely disappointed in this regard. Like I said above..my main concern is for the story (or possible lack thereof).

Just tried the first stage of the demo and I loved it. The game looks awesome and it was pretty intense. Sheva seems quite capable with the AI controlling her but it's most likely going to be much better with a human partner.

That's because the demo didn't really have much that hadn't been done in RE4 other than having a partner. I know that RE5 is so much bigger than this demo is and I guess the great parts are best when played in the full game. Still, it's shame it didn't get it's message through especially when RE4's demo was outstanding! RE4 had one of the best demos from what I can remember. It was all one big playthrough that started from the beginning with a story that made you want to know more after it was over. RE5's demo? Two way too short segments that leave you questioning what just happened. Couldn't it at least have taken place to when you first meet up with Sheva or something? I'm sure Capcom has it's reasons and the less we know about it, the better experience we may have with the full game.

I can't remember the last time I utterly hated a demo. :( The controls don't work for this game like they did with RE4 (and it's a hard step from the Wii edition), but more importantly, the real-time menu is TERRIBLE! -___-

I'm disappointed.

I can just hear my self cussing out Sheva left and right.

You dumb *****, get out of the way!!!

Hey!!! You just stole my ammo!!!!

Why won't you move!!!!

Thanks!!! Now I missed my headshot!!!

Shut up already!!!!

No!!! I'm Fine!!!

Move!!!! Now!!!!

There's too many of them??!! Who's idea was it to jump over there anyway!!!!

Controls didn't feel great.

What's the deal with that cutscene? No captions for the guy speaking a different language but captions for the guy we can understand? Hello, Capcom?

I'll pick it up used.

Does anyone know if Sheva going to annoy me the whole game? I hope not.

Been busy with work and college and just finally finshed a few playthroughs of the demo and must admit that I walked away quite satisfied.

It surprises me though how much of a mediocre response we are seeing here on the forums.

1)Complaints about Sheva's A.I.: To be completely honest I never felt I was continually micromaneging her. She was pretty capable of handling herself and saved me from a few hits in a lot of instances. Granted she's not perfect, and there are a few inconviences with her A.I. For one, she likes to stay in close proximity with you so if a big guy is swinging a chainsaw or axe, she's more than likely to get hit. The best way is to get as far away as you can and take shots at them so that way Sheva won't get it in a scurry between you and the big guy. THis is the only issue I had with her A.I. When I wanted her to pick of ammo, all I had to do was stand by it and she'll come over and pick it up. She gives you quite a few seconds before she decides to pick it up herself.

2)About the in-game item swap use, I think it just adds the tension of the game. No longer do you have the safety to pause the game and heal. You have to strategize and pick your areas so you have enough time to swap weapons or use a herb. I think makes the game that much more immersive is there are no out of game menus to deal with equipment. It's all real-time.

I though the demo was excellent but was indeed way to short and felt like we were suddenly thrown into a situation. It would have been proper to to give a scene to build up towards(perhaps when we first meet Sheva) or when he first gets there. My only conclusions is that they didn't want to player to play any scene in the game besides the two we've have seen countless of times in trailers and the demos shown at conferences. If anything, I feel this is a more action-oriented game then Resident Evil 4. Whether it's for the better or worse is entirely up to us gamers.

with the inventory, there are special slots that correspond to the directions on your d-pad..all you have to do is tap the d-pad in that direction and it equips the item you put in the corresponding slot, whether it's a weapon or an herb. I thought it worked great, especially since you can utilize the real-life strategy of swapping weapons to avoid having to reload in tight situations. Reloading is quite slow and, worse, you can't move while you do it...so just tap the d-pad to swap in that shotgun to give yourself a little breathing room...then tap to bring out your herb and heal. Worked nice.

Secondly, I never had a problem with Sheva burning through ammo. I had her using the SMG and she actually fired it in bursts..burst one zombie down, burst the second. She's pretty effiicient. I spent the whole demo with her handing me ammo, because I was wasting on headshots, which are apparently useless. Sure she picks up the ammo, but you can just ask her for it when you get a breather. Half the time i was like "where did you find all this!?"

anyway..here I am defending a demo I wasn't impressed with...I would say the devs could have used a playthrough of Dead Space to help with the control scheme, but then I guess they never got the chance to play it over there.

As some people have already mentioned, what bothered me most in the demo was Sheva. I've only played each level once, but I wasn't able to complete either because she kept getting herself killed. It was pretty ridiculous. I also agree that controls feel clunky in this game, but at least you can increase the aiming speed, which is nice. I think if the game handled a bit more like Dead Space it would be more fun to play. I still think it's a good deal of fun otherwise though.

It's interesting to read the different impressions around Sheva's AI. My biggest concern is that she'll run through items and ammo far too quickly and then become a burden during the game, though Destruction, Ish, and Whisperingmute seem to say otherwise. Hopefully, it will work out in the long run and players won't be stranded in game with no ammo. I've never a big fan of taking care of NPC's or any escort type mission, and even though Resident Evil 4 had a huge chunk of the game dedicated to escorting and protecting Ashely, they really worked into the game quite well, and I had very little issues with it.

When I think about how Capcom handled the whole escort Ashley deal, then perhaps things might not be so bad. Now, what's wrong with the controls? It can't be that bad, can it?

After playing the demo for some time, I am pretty satisfied with the game...although I could see the single player experience would take some enjoyment from it. I don't think the controls were as big as an issue as choosing a segment of the game that is fairly difficult.

Is that Mikami from Death Note in your avatar pic? If so, I find it funny, the connection that name has to Resident Evil. :P

Well to me it feels like RE4 with the shooting controls of Gears (although the control settings can be changed). Strangely, the two don't mix well together as it took me a while to get used to it. Capcom changed the shooting to appeal more to western gamers yet kept the other parts left intact. That makes things a mess as my natural instinct to reload (for 360) is either x or RB and sometimes even B. I keep forgetting that I need to aim while pressing A to reload and realize this isn't Gears :P I would have preferred using the shooting controls of Dead Rising. Also, RE4s controls doesn't stand well by today's standards with uncooperative camera and movement in an almost tank-like feeling. Aside from all that, I can still see myself enjoying the full game.

Umm. I must be even stupider than the AI. Sheva saved my ass more times than I can count on this demo, lol. I **** you not. That's about the only reason why I managed to finish it. It's going to be an outstanding co-op experience.

 You know I never made that connection until now, but yeah, it's him. Speaking of Resident Evil's Mikami, didn't he say that he was going to avoid RE5 because it would stress him out? I wonder how the game would have turned out if he was at the helm.

Yikes, I can definitely see that as a little awkward for the controls. Looks like I'll need to play around with the different control schemes to find the right fit. Wouldn't mind using a Gamecube controller on this one.

I think he did say something like that. The game would probably be better with him working on it, but I'm willing to see what the team can churn out without him. But really, I wish they'd have kept Chris looking like he used to, instead of like some rough-looking, steroid-obsessed/addicted freak.

Oh, and does Wesker = Kira? :P

Actually I played through the demo again and I found the type A controls quite familiar to RE4 and Dead Rising. It'll feel comfortable for the ones who have played those games. Though I did notice that the default type D "Gears" controls work better for moving around as the two analogs can control the movement and camera simultaneously. Type A only has the left analog for looking around and moving (plus used for aiming the gun) which leaves me wondering how I went through RE4 with that!

I guess I've learned to appreciate the new controls, but it's still miles away from Dead Space's :P
