I remember about 5 years ago on Gamespot, there was a study conducted that consisted of like 1,000 people. People of all ages from 4-22. Long story short, videogames had some effect where "P-Waves" that were caused by videogames gave people a hard time socializing.

People who played just 16 hours of video games per week had a hard time socializing.

Anyone remember or hear any of this?

I think that study is a bit of a no brainer, but to answer your question from a personal point of view; yes. For me, a lot of my friends are gamers, so it helps (LANS, round playing console, w/e). I live with my girlfriend and we spend a lot of time with each other, she's fine with my gaming habbits and just does something else or chats with me when i'm playing. That said, it's not everything, you have to make time for friends and family.

I don't remember that study, but I think the mere fact that your spending 16 hours a week of your spare time gaming has more to do with socializing issues than "P-Waves".

idk its just a hobby, a expensive hobby, and you can bond well with those who enjoy it as much as you do. but games havent prevented me from making normal social interaction.

imo its the other way around, people who have a hard time socializing turn to video games.

will anyone second my /thread?

I can see the argument, and it's certainly possible. I don't know which is first (anti-social behavior leading to gaming or gaming leading to anti-social behavior), but I really think they do go together.

As others have pointed out, if you making gaming part of your social interactions, it can actually help. But the problem is most games are still focusing on online multiplayer instead of local, so it's getting made worse.

Hrmm, I can see that being true in many cases. As for myself, I am a very social person and had a large network of friends...then WoW came into my life and destroyed what I once had as real life friends. All my friends had turned into e-friends whom I got to know very well (if you had ever been in a high end guild you know how this goes).

I do know a few others who have turned to video games to escape life's problems, whether its anxiety, depression, etc.

I think that in the end it just comes down to the persons psyche. Video-games alone is for someone a place to hide when having a hard time to socialise, not the reason for him/her's lack of low social life.

But to answer the question, yes i think it effects you. But how much depends on the person itself.

Most of my friends love playing games so that helps. However, I have friends who don't play games and I still talk and hang out with them. I don't really find any trouble socialising and it's really easy easy when the topic is about games :).

I don't know, why would gaming make it harder to socialize, compared to, say, modelism or TV?

Yeah, there are times I'd rather play a game than go out, and there are times I'd rather go out for a meal with friends and enjoy the sun. Generalizing feels pointless.
