i see ppl not liking the price of modern warfare 2 ($59.99 at most places). i agree it sucks, since $49.99 or less would obviously be better for us. but i remember back when some SNES games would come out, they were $69.99....maybe even $79.99 or more...brand new at toys r us.

what games do you remember being expensive on release day and how much was it?

I never had a Super Nintendo, but I heard Chrono Trigger was like 69.99 when it was first released.

I am fairly certain that Phantasy Star 4 was 99.99 at release. Street Fighter 2 Turbo was 74.99 most places. I also recall certain n64 games being 79.99 new, Blast Corps is the first that comes to mind.

I remember the high prices as well. I don't think that there was really a standard made for video game prices during that generation, it seemed like it was more up to the selling store, than a general price standard throughout the market.

the RPGs for the SNES and the Genesis were the most expensive due to the larger cartridge capacities; many of them were $80-$90. Like daveyf03 said, Phantasy Star IV was $100 and well as Virtua Racing for the Genesis. We cant also forget that Neo Geo games were $200 each. I know a lot of people complain about the $60 price tag for games, but due to the facts that the industry is a hits based industry and that the market is so saturated with games, that $60 price tag will become $20-$30 (even less) in a few months (with some exceptions, of course)

I live in southwestern Pennsylvania. Our games were almost always $49.99 no matter where you went. One time I was in the middle of the state though, and there was a retail toy store in the mall selling SNES games for a good bit higher. I am thinking $59.99 and up. But that was a small town called DuBois, so maybe if places had lack of competition they jacked them up. I do remember Batman and Robin on SNES being higher even here though, like really expensive I think. I don't know why.

Earthbound was pretty expensive when it released, probably because the box was so big, and it came with a strategy guide.

Yeah I've also heard that one of the Phantasy Stars was 100 bucks. Ouch. I just wait 2 weeks and go to half.com and grab everything for around 40 :)

Street Fighter Alpha 2 for the SNES was $69.99. I remember like it was yesterday, I was walking in the video game isle at Toys'R'us looking at all the $19.99 sega genesis games that my parents at the time can only afford to buy for me. I looked over at Street Fighter Alpha 2 for the SNES and thought how great it must be since it cost so much.

I was gaming on my Commodore 64 back in the day. Most games were in the $30 range but you could find some as cheap as $5. Usually not very good ones, but they were out there. I'm guessing it's because floppies were way cheaper than cartridges.

I remember there being quite a different set of prices. Some games were $49.99, while others were $59.99, $69.99, and up. There wasn't a set standard price like there is now, which isn't such a bad thing, although anymore, you pay about $60 for a game that can be finished in 6-7 hours, while many of the SNES games took much longer to beat, in general.

I remember in about 1994 Australia, Mortal Kombat came out for the SNES at A$120.00! To give that context, GTA IV was A$110.00 on XBOX360 a matter of months ago. It was a massive release for the SNES here.
