Earlier this year there were interviews with Mortal Kombat Co-Creator Ed Boon and he announced that they are working on Mortal Kombat 8 and they are trying to invent all new characters

There you go, I'll do it for him.
The next MK game will be serious, and not funny/filled with comic relief. They are also using the Unreal graphics engine. Supposidly (in another interview) MK creator Ed Boon was extremely impressed, and loves Gears of War and wants his game to look like that.
Invent new characters? That wont sell at all, MK 9 will have everyone back again. :Pdvader654
Eh, the name will sell it, it will sell well. Will the new characters be really good, who knows. They've had a few really good new characters in the last 3 games. I still want to see the graphics though, if it can cool as good or almost as good as Gears of War, it'll be amazing.
When will this series die? Seriously, the game is just a big joke and the only reason anyone plays it is to see the comical fatalities.
The first Mortal Kombat game had some appeal. It was new, different, and ultra gory at the time. After a while, players discovered it was extremely shallow and had little replay. MK2 came out a bit later and it was an improvement. More characters, a few new moves and combos, and the gameplay was genuinely more interesting. CPU opponents were still poorly programmed, and relied on cheating to win.
Then came MK3... It was all downhill at this point. They should have gave up after MK2. The ridiculous instant-combos you'd get by just mashing a series of buttons. It was like playing a game of Simon where you just regurgitated the sequence. Most of the new characters had a very similar repertoire of moves which differed only in graphical effect. The programmers must've realised there was no depth to this game, so they artificially extended it's longevity by adding even MORE secrets to it (which you'll notice is now a common tactic to cover up for a shoddy game, along with "unlockables"). Poor game, all around.
The series never recovered and I'm surprised they're still able to get funding to push these stinkers out the door.

If you have ever played Gears of War in 1080p over a VGA with non-washed out colours (extended reference levels), and you have the proper HDTV, the graphics are AMAZING.Â
My vote is Boon needs to put MK to rest. They should have buried it after UMK3. It was cool back in the day though.Kage1
It still has a shot of being the best fighter on the market imoÂ
I hope it plays well too. MK games usually don't play too smoothly.http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=109509
