@xstroke: Alien Isolation(first person) and The Evil Within(3rd Person) are great.from what i heard The Evil Within has some technical Problems in the console versions and I'm not sure if it plays good with a controller.(so Imo buy TEW on PC) but these games aren't short.
Resident Evil 7 is also a Good Horror game(first person). But it is an Easy game and you should beat the game once to unlock the Harder difficulty.it is a shorter game and with a Better Story compare to AI. (TEW's story is convoluted and I still haven't figured out the full story)
you can also try Resident Evil Remake(3rd Person) which like RE 7 is an Easy game and isn't that Long.
the best Horror Games in the term of Story are Silent Hill 1,2,4.(all are 3rd Person).I heard that the third one's story isn't that much good but unfortunately the Gameplay in these games isn't that much good.
hope this helps you.
The Evil Within, DreadOut, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Resi 1-4, Resi 5 and 6 for the theme of horror but more action focused, Lucius, Alien: Isolation, The Last Door, Outlast, Resi Revelations (for my action), Pajama Sam: There is no Need to Hide When it's Dark Outside, Limbo, Condemned: Criminal Origins, Dead Space 1 and 2, Rule of Rose, Fatal Frame series, Fear, Until Dawn, Clock Tower, Zero Escape series, White Noise 1 and 2 (it's eh, but can be fun if you have friends who own the game as well), Inside, Bloodborne (you'd be surprised), the upcoming Prey reboot (assumption), Dead by Daylight, Vampire - The Masquerade - Bloodlines, Bioshock 1 and 2, Little Nightmares, Metro series, Spookie's House of Jump Scares, Mad Father, Detention, Dead Realm, Thumper, Deadly Premonition, Zombie Army Trilogy, Corpse Party, Lone Survivor, Obscure series (super cheesy), The Black Watchman (a steam bought arg that is super interesting), Masochisia, Albino Lullaby, Dead Nation/Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition, The Count Lucanor, Murdered: Soul Suspect (honestly not the best "horror" game but a very interesting game to get on sale), Yomawari: Night Alone, Hatoful Boyfriend, Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy Remastered, Manhunt, Year Walk, The Last of Us, some of the Silent Hill games, Siren, and Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem.
i can only echo what others have said.
alien isolation is my favourite this gen but that's probably because i enjoy stealth based games. but it's incredibly atmospheric and gripping at times.
resident evil 7 was great and pretty disturbing for the first few hours but then for me quickly transitioned from scary to more action based as i became de-sensitized / accustomed to the horror elements.
until dawn is an interesting cinematic movie style game involving teenagers partying at a remote mountain cabin in the snow in which they begin to drop one by one by a mystery killer which is definitely worth a play.
beyond that there's only dying light that i can think of - an open world zombie based game with some fun gameplay that certainly has its moments. certainly worth a go as you can pick it up for peanuts
What platform? If PS3, I recommend getting all 3 Fatal Frame games.

Resident Evil 4/7/Revelations, Fatal Frame, Fatal Frame 2, Dead Space, The Evil Within, Alan Wake, Eternal Darkness, Manhunt 2, Condemned
Depending on your region you can get Demento on PS3 (Haunting Ground). Very underrated gem. It's mostly a series of puzzles on a timer. The timer being when an enemy appears to interrupt your current puzzle. They can't be hurt till the later sections either which keeps the game both tense and horrifying.
If you prefer First person though? Just get on-board with the Bio/Resi 7 hype-train. Despite its flaws, the atmosphere and story alone are fantastic, all while playing like the classic games in the seires.
Yet many of the above have stated games I really enjoyed also, but my tops are certainly ResiRemake and The Evil Within.
The horror games that I usually play are Resident Evil and Until Dawn. I highly recommend it if you really want a real horror games.

This guy picked all the best ones. Outside of this, F.E.A.R. and its expansions is one of my favorite games of all time. Just stay the hell away from 2 and 3. Trashy, cheap jump-scare, repetitive, CoD-esque, lookin' ass games.
