hey guys

how can i convince my parents to let me play shooter games? i'm 13, and my mom basically hates fps's, but my dad doesn't really mind (at least i don't think he does. never actually asked, just my idea...). i've *cough* downloaded *cough* and "tested" ;) lots of m-rated shooters (half-life, half-life, halo, f.e.a.r., battlefield 2, etc) and so far i haven't killedanyone in real life. but i want to actually be allowed to play shooters (if nothing else, the half-life series. it's the BEST FPS EVER!!!), and not have to alt-tab every time i hear someone coming. how can i convince my parents to let me play half-life? and i should also note that when i was 9, i somehow downloaded half-life: uplink and my mom found out i was playing it and freaked out. not to say that her opinions (or my maturity) haven't changed, but you never know...

please help! i'm really freaking out about not getting to play half-life! every time i see anything related to it i get all miserable because i'm not allowed to play it!

ps. if you need more info, just say the word

find a way to prove to them that you have common sense and that you wont go out on a shooting spree just cause you did it in a game and thought it was cool. If you can get your mom to say "Hey, your a kid that can distinguish the real world from a video game." then thats all you need,

well the thing is, i don't have a clue how to even bring up the subject.

and if i say "half-life" she'll feak out, because she remembers one time when i was 8 that i somehow got my little hands on half-life uplink.

hmm... i need to bring it up indirectly, or start off with something else and move to shooters, then leave it at that, and bring up half-life another day in the same manner...

any ideas?

EDIT: or i could use the opportunities i have to play shooters at my friends' and cousins' houses, while my mom's there. then play the game IN HER FACE (:)) and keep doing that a few times, and when she notices that i haven't commited any mass-murders after playing them, she'll let my buy half-life... i think that would be the best way, but please do still give me more ideas in case that fails!

how old are you anyway? assuming you arent outragiously young...

my uncle is a fairly strict parent. however, he used to let my cousin play all kinds of WW2 shooters because they firmly established a sense of good and evil. the americans were in the right (atleast to him, but thats a whole other matter) and he was engaging in rightious affairs. he also said that it brings about patriotism.

maybe try that angle and then ween them over to half life once they see that fps's havent turned you into the next charles manson and eating babies isnt a side effect.

Respect the fact that your parents care about what you are viewing in terms of media. There are plenty of quality T-rated shooters out there. I know I won't be letting my 13 year-old play M-rated games when I have kids.

the rating isn't really the issue here, it's the guns.

my mom hates games where you shoot people (dunno if blue-blooded aliens, combine, zombies, headcrabs, and the like count... :P), so my goal is to get her to not hate pixels arranged to resemble a firearm. (i don't believe she understands that they're just that -- pixels).

foxhoud_fox aside, does anyone have any more ideas?

start asking about getting a real gun. after a month or so of that a game will see so childlike and friendly they let you play anything you want.:) and if not sorry but i rather have you mom not let you play something then blame the game if you do something stupid.

Wait until you're older enough to play those games.
But if you must have one then go get "Duck Hunter"

Just prove your maturity to your parents. Let them know that you learn your morals from them and that they have way more influence on your behavior than a video game.

Tell your mother that if anything it's less likely for you to go around shooting people because you were able to vent your frustration with a video game. Say it's therapeutic and provides a release.

that's actually a good post, besides "just listen, your parents know whats best".

nobody seems to understand that my goal is to not have to "just listen", and actually be allowed to play something besides need for speed and trackmania. yes, indeed. car games are about the only games my mom lets me play, since the esrb is so screwed up that they rate everything that doesn't involve cars a T or M, and thus they scare my mom and she doesn't let my play them. she was reluctant to let me get portal when i said it was rated T. :/

why dont you be a good son and listen to them ?

you seriously need to piss off.

Don't. Wait till you reach the legal age.Black_Knight_00

and so do you. and FYI there is no legal age. the esrb is just a seriously screwed up guideline system.

ahh, yet another intelligent person. (no sarcasm)

that's a good idea too; i hadn't thought about that/

i'll try some of you guys' suggestions; wish me luck! (but don't stop posting!)

Mate, I'm 27, I'm way beyond the age restriction. Besides, did you know a store caught selling M games to kids can be fined? That's Law enforcing.

then can you suggest a method of doing that? that's my main problem. i think one way would be to play fps's at my friends' and family's houses while my mom's there, and make sure she sees my play them. then keep doing that a few times whenever i have the opportunity and eventually she'll notice that i haven't commited any mass-murders after playing them.

lol why witcher? is it scary, or really gory?

and the problem isn't with shooters in particular, but violent games. even if it's a game where you throw bathtubs at people with a gravity gun, she won't let me play it. i borrowed my friend's spiderman 2 game once, and she got all scared when she saw the T rating, but she doesn't care if i play pacman world 3, which is equally violent. :/

Of course, that could teach you how to sing and how to cook, not to kill. I love that movie.

I don't know how to help you, I've never had the problem myself. I was playing Wolfenstein 3D when I was around three years old and Duke Nukem games when I was around six.

well, Talk to your mother. The fact that you're afraid that just bringing it up might freak her out means you are too young, your reactions to some of the posts here are also a bit immature, the best thing is to ignore comments you dont like but you chose not to do that. :| but I still have a solution.

Have her rent you Saving Private Ryan, Black hawk Down, Letters from Iwo Jima and Thin Red Line. All of em are war movies that will make you sick to your stomach. However, if you can show her that you can watch those movies and come out OK, then she wont have a problem with you playing some "game".

I know those movies are long, but if you dont show her that you watched them, she will keep treating you like a kid.

Again, talk to her. Dont get frustrated. People who get frustrated are known as teenagers, if you want your mom to not treat you like one, then DO NOT act like a teenager. It's easier said than done, but If you do watch those movies WITH her in the room, then you can show her that you can take violence with no problem.

>>yes, i know. i just can't stand it when people go and tell me the exact opposite of what i want to hear, when other people have proven that it is possible. i know that i need to ignore them, but i haven't broken my habit just yet. and i'm not too young (imho), because if you actually read the OP, you'd see that i've *cough* downloaded *cough* and "tested" such games without my parent's knowing, and haven't commited any mass-murders.

>>i've seen the end of saving private ryan, and all of letters from iwo jima. thin red line sounds familiar; i think i've seen it and just forgot. none of the made me sick to my stomach, and i've watched band of brothers and had no problem with it. her main issue is that i would be the one killing the pixels, not watching someone else kill pixels. (poor pixels! oh well. the things only live about a 60th to a 75th of a second anyway. ;)

no, you're screwed because your parents even though they love you, are pretty ignorant letting you watch war movies like SPR and not letting you play mind numbing shooters. Again, no offense intended.

And no home is complete without a secret porn stash, not having one is not living the American Dream.

There is no logic that can break a mothers righteos ignorance. But fear not, there is a strategy that may work (it did when I was younger). This may take a while so be patient. First you need to find a game that she is mildly aposed to (like a teen rated game) and convinc her to let you get it. After that slowly but surley ask for more and more violent games. Before she knows it, you will be running down pedestrians in gta. This method is kind of long but it works.

I didn't really have an interest in shooters until was about 13-14.

My parents knew that I was mature enough to distinguish real life from a video game, and let me play whatever the hell i want.

I think it started with resident evil...

@redstorm72

that's exactly what i thought of! i think that would work with her, or playing such games at my friend's/family's houses while she's right there. then she'll see that i haven't commited any mass-murders and let me play shooters (hopefully)

@Shmiity

same here. i didn't really have an interest until this year/last year. except the thing is, my parents don't realize that i'm mature enough, and my mom is just plain opposed to games involving violence (especially guns)

i think i'm gonna go with redstorm72's idea and mine...

start with unrealistic t rated shooters, then move up slowly to f.e.a.r. and Half-Life 2, and also play shooters at friends/family's houses when she's there. that should do the trick!

@Vuurk

LOL!

Hey! I'm 13, 14 on October 5 but I'm allowed to play M rated games, in fact all my games are M rated (MGS4, RSV2 and Resistance FOM) - I'm going to get more then shooters at the end of the year though (sick of 'em) but I do find co-op fun. Here is what you should do:

Go to the store with 60 bucks for a game with your Dad. My Dad is similair to yours and doesn't care too much, and as long as it isn't coming out of his account he'll be fine with it.If that doesn't work maybe ask your mom to set an age where you will be allowed like "I'll let you play once your 14, 15 whatever..."

Hope I helped. Dads are easy to sway though. Especially if they don't spend much time with you (mine works like 12 hour days) so they will be willing to spend time with you. If I wanted to my Dad would buy me GTA4 even though my mom would freak.

My Mum never cared what I play/watch, and I've never killed anyone, been in jail etc. etc. The fact of the matter is if she will not let you play them when your 14, there is little hope until you are of proper age. I can only suggest getting a job to buy them yourself, at the very least it will make you look more mature. There is no easy answer, other then being disobedient and going behind her back playing them.

Maybe try starting with games with poor graphics, or rated no more than 15 (in america I think this is 'T for Teen'). Things like Deus Ex, Half-Life, Battlefront, heck maybe even things like Worms. or show her how their is little difference to watching war films and playing war games.

Well, you can always let them see, for example, Sniper Elite, and then Half-Life 2 won't seem so violent to them...
