I haven't played Fallout 3 but I have finished Dead Space and I have to say, Dead Space is friggin amazing. It is the only game that I've wanted to beat again straightaway after finishing (sadly I have exams so I can't). I highly recommend Dead Space, even if you rent it, the story and gameplay are worth playing through for any gamer.
I would go with Fallout 3 over Dead Space. Dead Space is more of a shorter and definitely much more scary game, and is definitely worth buying in my opinion, but after playing Dead Space, and just recently starting Fallout 3, I would definitely go with Fallout 3.
Dead Space, while a good game, is for the most part very linear, both in where you can go and what you can do. Fallout is enormous, there are tons of sidequests, you can do what you want when you want, it has a lot of RPG elements, etc. You would definitely get more bang for your buck out of Fallout3.
