I've had that habit before, where I'll buy something knowing I already have games I'm working on. Usually the justification is that it's a deal, or that maybe it will have a limited print. I guess it's a balancing act.
What about you, GD? Do you buy games you know you won't play right away?
No anymore. Used to do that all the time back when Steam still had the flash deals. Now, even if the game is on my wishlist and at the lowest price historically, I usually don't purchase it as I already have something like 40 games installed and a lot more sitting in my library yet to be played anyway.
Hmm, no. Not really. Sometimes buy games to play with friends and that's the purpose of the experience in full (Beat em' Ups, other coop experiences that are not MH). But the intent is to play them soon typically.
Usually the only games that gather are from some unexpected condition that prevents me playing the game in that week_
I have some old DS games when my DS was not working and needed a new one. Some of my games also get lost, and then need to find a new window to play them. And lastly gifted games friends or family believe would enjoy and maybe I will. . when I get around to trying them, and may regret. . (was bought a copy of Cyber Punk)
Have games I've still not played. Some pretty old. Shelved, yet one day will play and at least try-out.
However if I just don't play a game further because I wasn't enjoying my time with it? it's no longer with me in any capacity. I don't keep games that I don't find fun.
Any game I like, I keep. Assuming own a system that runs the game.
If I find a game at a great price I'll pick it up even if I know I won't get around to playing it for years.
I am similar in that regard, but i have stopped doing that recently. Don't know if you've noticed, but a lot of those games are made available for free on one distribution platform or another, down the line.
I don't regret buying anything, but i try and tailor my purchases to the available time i have to play them these days.
I found myself buying all Assassins Creed/Far Cry game even though I only played very few of them. Those ubisoft sales can get crazy low. I bought the Odyssey + Origin ultimate edition bundle for idk $30. Those version on release was around $120 each. Got all AC games except AC Valhalla and FC5 and definitely will complete the collection once I see the price for the complete edition drops below $15.
@lucidique: I hear what you're saying but I buy physical and much prefer it over digital, so even if a game I bought comes out on PS+ it doesn't bother me because I have the superior version (imo).

I see what you mean. I believe you are probably into the collectability aspect of gaming.
