News story can be found here:

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6172464.html

Console race:

1. Wii--37,300
2. DS--35,900
3. PS2--18,200
4. PSP--15,000
5. 360--12,300
6. PS3--6,500
7. GBA--6,100

Here are the top ten software titles(ripped directly from the Gamespot article):

NPD Group Canadian console software sales for May 2007 (game--system--publisher--copies sold, rounded to hundreds):

Pokemon Diamond--DS--Nintendo--24,900
Pokemon Pearl--DS--Nintendo--19,500
Mario Party 8--Wii--Nintendo--17,700
Wii Play w/ Wii Remote--Wii--Nintendo--16,000
Spider-Man 3--PS2--Activision--14,500
Forza Motorsport 2--Xbox 360--Microsoft--12,600
Super Paper Mario--Wii--Nintendo--10,000
Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars--Xbox 360--Electronic Arts--9,500
Spider-Man 3--Xbox 360--Activision--9,200
Guitar Hero II--Xbox 360--Activision--9,000

Of course, all these numbers look small and kind of meaningless. Let's assume that America has identical buying habits to Canada (they're not, but they are close). America is almostly exactly nine times bigger than Canada. Below are all the numbers multiplied by nine.

Projected US numbers:

Console race:

1. Wii--335,700
2. DS--323,100
3. PS2--163,800
4. PSP--135,000
5. 360--110,700
6. PS3--58,500
7. GBA--54,900

NPD Group Canadian console software sales for May 2007 (game--system--publisher--copies sold, rounded to hundreds):

Pokemon Diamond--DS--Nintendo--224,100
Pokemon Pearl--DS--Nintendo--175,500
Mario Party 8--Wii--Nintendo--159,300
Wii Play w/ Wii Remote--Wii--Nintendo--144,000
Spider-Man 3--PS2--Activision--103,500
Forza Motorsport 2--Xbox 360--Microsoft--113,400
Super Paper Mario--Wii--Nintendo--90,000
Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars--Xbox 360--Electronic Arts--85,500
Spider-Man 3--Xbox 360--Activision--82,800
Guitar Hero II--Xbox 360--Activision--81,000

What might it mean? That the PS4 might sneak past the evil GBA for once in the US NPD? :P

The only thing that I don't like about the numbers is Spiderman 3 for the 360 selling into the top 10. I guess it just goes to show you that brand name can have a huge impact on selling a game.

Seeing those poor PS3 numbers compared to the 360 sales, I still don't understand why Square-Enix is so stubborn in keeping exlcusive to PS3.

Are they so proud to think that they alone can save the PS3? I hope they learn their lesson on this and become humbled.

I don't even know why I keep clicking on all of these NPD number update threads, when I know exactly what I'm gonna see, it has gotten to the point where it is almost as boring to look as the NBA Finals.

I don't think those projected U.S. numbers are realistic. The Wii is doing well and all, but there's no way its blowing out the 360 like that in the U.S.

Mario Party 8 outsold Forza 2. Canada is doomed, the apocalypse is near.

Other than that, though, the list isn't particularly surprising. Pokemon and the DS going nuts, and the Wii...actually, I'd like to know where all these Wiis are selling, because there have been none available on the island.

Hey I did my part and picked up Forza 2 and it was the Collector's Edition no less. :P

Anyway that isn't too bad for Forza 2 seeing as it pretty much came out at the end of the month. Of course I'm not sure when Mario Party 8 came out. If I had a Wii I probably would have grabbed that one too.

Can't say I'm really surprised at the numbers though. It is nice that things improved overall quite a bit compared to last May's sales though.

Never thought I'd see the day when Nintendo led sales charts for more than one Zelda-less month. Pretty nutty. Also nutty considering the Wii is still EXTREMELY hard to find up here, especially in the Vancouver area. Had they released enough units to meet demand, that number would double.

MarcusAntonius

I don't think the gap between the Wii beating the 360 2:1 and beating the 360 3:1 is all that big. All it takes is a big month from Wii, or a slow one from the 360. That said, I don't expect the gap to be that big either. These are merely what we may expect later this month based on what's happening on our side of the border.

To put these numbers in context, here's April's US NPD compared with the Canadian NPD number multiplied by nine. Let's see if these results are similar at all...

US NPD:

Hardware:

DS: 471,000
Wii: 360,000
PS2: 194,000
PSP: 183,000
360: 174,000
GBA: 84,000
PS3: 82,000

Canada NPD multiplied by nine (what I used to do the projected US numbers above, rounded off to nearest thousand):

Wii: 379,000
DS: 314,000
PS2: 162,000
360: 115,000
PSP: 109,000
GBA: 71,000
PS3: 65,000

Judging by these numbers, the Canadian projections are useful, but on the low side for everything not Wii. They're also way lower than the DS actual numbers, and there's a fairly significant gap for 360 and PSP as well. Still, I think the projections are accurate enough to give you a very rough image of what the US NPD will look like. I'm going to see if I can compare numbers, see if I can spot some patterns about how the US and Canada numbers correlate, and hopefully, I'll be able to make some accurate projections based on that data.

No kidding. Nintendo could, at the very least, be flirting with 500k a month if they actually had that stupid little white box on store shelves. I wouldn't say "especially in Vancouver", because there have been people from all over reporting never having seen the Wii on store shelves. I found a Roger's Video once that had Wiis in stock, though I didn't actually see them, and already I heard some kids in the corner plotting to get one for the reason, if I recall, that boiled down to "dude, it's a Wii". :P

I'm shocked that it's June and the demand is still vastly outstripping supply. But at least I'm starting to hear anecdotal evidence of people happening upon Wiis on store shelves. It seems like you still need to get there on the day of a shipment, but at least the things are lasting half a day now. It's... a start, I suppose.

I've said that this Christmas could be very telling as to which way the console wars will go. The Wii is selling like mad heading into Christmas but the 360 has a phenomenal line-up, the kind that comes around, like, once a generation. I was hoping that it would establish whether the 360 could rise above the Wii permanently, or if the Wii could hold its own against a spectacular line-up. But what if these shortage issues persist all the way through Christmas, it'll be difficult to see what's what. If the 360 sells millions and millions of units, and Nintendo is far behind but sells out everything anyway, it won't make very much clear. Oh well. We'll see what we see when we see it.

Actually, there's no way to tell what the demand is in either territory. It's just that Wiis sell out wherever they go, whenever they arrive. For whatever reason, and Nintendo seems to be shipping more Wiis to Canada than the market size indicates.

P.S. Why aren't you a MOD anymore? :P

MayorJohnny

I quit a while back, and I haven't found out yet whether or not they want me back.

Wow I forgot how bad the PS3 numbers were last month, where is the price drop. Can it get worse than that?

Prediction for tomorrow:

  • DS - 440k
  • Wii - 355k
  • PS2 - 185k
  • 360 - 180k
  • PSP - 180k
  • GBA - 91k
  • PS3 - 90k
dvader654

The 360 needs a price drop too. For a system with that strong a line-up, it sure could be doing a whole lot better. I think this is going to be a down month for expensive hardware. The cheap stuff is going to do fairly well, except the PSP, which I think is going to lose some of the momentum from its price drop.

Anyways, here are my predictions:

DS: 455,000
Wii: 380,000
PS2: 200,000
PSP: 163,000
360: 157,000
GBA: 88,000
PS3: 76,000

I've had to go to four different sites to find it, but I think I've found the NPD numbers for the first four months of the year. I'm just about to compile the cumulative numbers so far, which should give us a better idea of how each system is doing this year overall.

Unfortunately, I don't think I have the January numbers for the GBA, so that system is going to be out. Sorry PS3. :P

The first four numbers are the first four months in order that they happened. So you can see trends:

DS: 239k + 485k + 508k + 471k = 1,703,000

Wii: 436k + 335k + 259k + 360k = 1,390,000

PS2: 299k + 295k + 280k + 194k = 1,068,000

360: 294k + 228k + 199k + 174k = 895,000

PSP: 211k + 176k + 180k + 183k = 750,000

PS3: 244k + 127k + 130k + 82k = 583,000

The DS and Wii are doing really well. The PS2 is the Chris Chelios of the console game world. The 360 is having a good year overall but those consistent drops in sales are alarming. If the 360 fails to rebound this month, Microsoft could be digging itself a hole that an amazing line-up might not be able to get them out of (but I still think it will, especially if that line-up comes with a price drop). The PSP's numbers are solid, not much to report, other than the fact that other than January, which seems to be an up month oddly, its sales have been within a 7k range. The PS3 started off fine, but has had two major drop-offs, and needs to rebound, and rebound fast.

Here are the sites I used for my numbers:

Someone at neogaf does the stats in a graph for this year and stuff, let me see if I can find it.

EDIT: Found the numbers -

U.S. (Dec 31-Apr 7)
360 - 721K
PS3 - 501K
WII - 1,030K

JPN (Jan 1-Apr 8 )
360 - 81,976
PS3 - 368,343
WII - 1,094,658

Total U.S. + JPN for 07 sales
360 - 803K
PS3 - 869K
WII - 2,125K

Add last months to those.

Found a graph : http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6443798&postcount=235

Thanks for the help, dvader, but unfortunately, I had already added up my numbers by the time you posted. Appreciate the graph, though. Touches on last year too, which is also useful.

Looks like affordablity will be the key player in this game.

That's why I can't stop showing my praise for the DS and its software. I think its great price and quality selection in its games that appeals to everyone is a winning deal. Just thinking about the upcoming future line-up from Square-Enix, Team Ninja,Atlus, Ubisoft, and Bioware has me excited.

This is the first time in all my years of gaming where a handheld is satisfying all my gaming needs. I'd love to dive into all those next-gen games but the price has been driving me away, which stinks. So that's why the DS has been so valuable so far.

There MUST be a price drop for those behemoth consoles if Sony and Microsoft wants to win. At least by the end of this year before the holidays, or else, it will be a Nintendo Christmas.

DJ_Lae

If I recall correctly (I no longer have the chart with the exact May 2005 figures) Forza was a pretty modest seller (a GS article indicates it sold 100K+ copies). A reasonable explanation (the one I subscribed to at the time) was that most Xbox owners were saving their moneys for X360s, but its quite possible that its just too complicated for some people (its more hardcore than Gran Turismo, which is really saying something).

http://www.gamespot.com/xbox/driving/forzamotorsport/news.html?sid=6128131&mode=news

Other top sellers for the month (games selling more than 100,000 units) included Midnight Club III: DUB Edition and Lego Star Wars, both for the PS2, and Forza Motorsport for the Xbox.

By way of contrast, Mario Party 7 sold over a half million copies in 2 months on the GC.

It will be interesting to see how Canadian numbers match up to US numbers, though I would be shocked to see much difference. Personally, I am pulling for Forza, which even if it demands skills I don't have (I know basic maintenancebut that's about it and I might be able to draw a stright line)is a really well done racing game which pays its audience the compliment of assuming knowledge about car tuning as well as offering the the opportunity to show off their art skills.

It seems to be a worldwide thing as well. When I was in the Virgin Megastore in London (Piccadilly Circus), there was a sign taped to the window that read:

"We have Wii! Check downstairs for details."

Of course, all these numbers look small and kind of meaningless. Let's assume that America has identical buying habits to Canada (they're not, but they are close). America is almostly exactly nine times bigger than Canada. Below are all the numbers multiplied by nine.

Projected US numbers:

Console race:

I know you're just making predictions, but IMO, you may have wanted to do more than just multiply everything by nine. Maybe a few of them should of had handicaps, because PS2 sales are finally slowing, and the GBA should be a little bit more... :)

Prequel to Rub Rabbits, actually. But yes, that particular series has a history of, err, provocative titles. I believe the Japanese version of Rub Rabbits was titled something like "I Want to Have Your Babies" or something.

EDIT: Found the numbers -

U.S. (Dec 31-Apr 7)
360 - 721K
PS3 - 501K
WII - 1,030K

JPN (Jan 1-Apr 8 )
360 - 81,976
PS3 - 368,343
WII - 1,094,658

Total U.S. + JPN for 07 sales
360 - 803K
PS3 - 869K
WII - 2,125K

Add last months to those.

Found a graph : http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6443798&postcount=235

Here's where it gets tricky. The PS3 has outsold (prior to last month) the 360 between the two territories combined. When you take into account that Europe is Sonyland, the PS3 probably still leads globally for '07.

Sony's Howard Stringer has gone on record of a PS3 price "refinement," which means it's going to happen any day now, seeing as hardware companies never let slip that a price drop is coming until it's happened/imminent. So, the 360 is already trailing the PS3 in sales for '07in two territories, and almost surely in a third as well, and Sony is gettingready to drop the price in days on their hardware.

Does anyone actually believe that Microsoft should not drop the price, like, yesterday?

And even the simple fact that they are being outsold by a system which by most accounts is struggling, and more than afew- tanking, is pathetic. Microsoft needed to drop the price inJanuary/February, April at the latest. They are now inthe unenviable position of losingtheirglobal early launch lead to the Wii, and they are being outsold onthe year(the numbers don't lie) by the PS3.

This tells me that Microsoft has no clue what they're doing. None at all.

HOW DARE YOU! Elebits takes a dump on Mario Party. Its no mini-game it rivals Katamari as the most awesome puzzle game to come out in the last few years.

 .... :)

I had to call you a doctor vader to see if you were ill after that statement.....but all he prescribes....... .... is death!
