Project Milo, E3 2010 (The Kinect Reveal). Its not a game nor was it completed, but its definately by far the best technical achievement, it was practically Magic.

In terms of graphics, I've already made a thread sort of covering that at System Wars.

In terms of controls:

  • Donkey Kong (1982, Game & Watch, Nintendo) - Introduced the cross-shaped D-pad design (a year before the NES)
  • Hang-On (1985, Arcade, Sega AM2) - First full-body motion experience, with the controller being an entire bike
  • Space Harrier (1985, Arcade, Sega AM2) - Introduced pressure-sensitive, analog flight stick, as well as rotating motion cabinet
  • Family Trainer (1986, NES, Bandai & Human Entertainment) - First use of Power Pad fitness/dance mat peripheral
  • Dragon Ball Z: VRVS (1995, Arcade, Sega & Banpresto) - Introduced true full-body motion controls (over a decade before Wii or Kinect)
  • Super Mario 64 (1996, N64, Nintendo) - First proper demonstration of what analog stick controls are capable of
  • Nintendogs (2004, DS, Nintendo) - First proper demonstration of what touch-screen controls are capable of

In terms of visual technology:

  • SubRoc-3D (1982, Arcade, Sega) - First commercial use of LCD shutter based stereoscopic 3D (long before consoles, movies, or televisions)
  • Time Traveller (1991, Arcade, Sega) - First game to simulate a holographic 3D effect
  • Sega VR (1991, Arcade, Sega) - First VR headset to detect head movement (decades before Oculus Rift)
