Of course they are. How can you be able to input commands if you cannot see what you're doing?

The graphics don't really matter to me. It either has to be really bad or visually amusing for me to notice.

I think graphics and gameplay are equally important. I'm not going to play a game that looks crappy, just like I wouldn't play one with crappy gameplay.

I don't care if a game is using the latest in technology or not, just as long as it looks decent and not buggy. I'd rather have a game filled with clean-looking static backgrounds and sprites than a game with terrible collision mechanics, jagged edges, and clipping all over the place. Not to mention games that try to look good but end up bogging down the console hardware with a good looking, yet laggy game or worse, a game that looks awful (muddy textures, aforementioned problems) and lags because of it.

Graphics for me are important because they can sometimes indicate the amount of care the developer puts into a game. They also help for presentation which is important. It's all about effect over substance though.

"It's all about effect over substance though. " Sad but true. Most people are so easily dazzled by sparkly graphics and such that many don't notice that the game they're playing isn't always as good as they initially think it is. This is why I believe older games offer the best challenge and overall goodness, that and the fact that the video game market was much less forgiving monetary-wise 15-20 years ago, so companies really had to think twice at the drawing board "is this a good idea?"

Graphics are important to a degree, but I much prefer engaging gameplay and a satisfying story to awe-inspiring graphics. I play the original Xbox and my N64. The graphics are decent for their time, but once I get used to them, their quality in comparison to modern times is pretty much irrelevant.

Yes they matter a bit. Not above gameplay though. They have to be decent. They have to be at least be up to the level or close to the time frame it was made. There can be a beautiful looking game that plays horrible just like there can be a below par looking game that plays great. So they are important, but not the thing I look for the most in my games.

Man knows games, its gameplay that makes it a game that always comes first unless its a genre that relies on story or something other to sell.

they're important in games which are supposed to provide an immersive experience, like first-person shooters

but most importantly, the gameplay needs to be there. a game can be fun and have bad graphics.

Yes graphics are important to me, partly a reason why I haven't got into console gaming until this generation, as the step down graphically from what I was used to on PCs was so great. It's like HDTV - you can't appreciate what your are missing until you have seen it working. Of course gameplay and story are important, and there are many cases where you can have great fun in a graphically simple game, but overall I do like nice looking games.

well the game has to be lice to look at and make sense. but it doesent have to be technically brilliant for me to like it. okami is the best looking game ever imho. i will also happily switch from old games on the VC to the DS to the Wii and then to somethign like crysis and i wont wince or anything.

My theory: If the story and Characters and Controls are great, it -deserves- good/near perfect graphics. ^_^

Yep, graphics are a huge part of the immersion for me. I can't play games like GTA: Chinatown wars anymore because it looks too much like ass, and just kills it for me. Sometimes I can enjoy retro games in small doses but they offer a different level of entertainment than a big blockbuster graphics powerhouse like a GTAIV or a Bioshock game.

Graphics DO matter, hence the term video games but artstyle should prevail over resolution. Obvioulsy story and gameplay are ,above all, the most important.

I usually always conclude that gameplay > graphics. But after playing Fallout 3 for awhile, I'm beginning to change my mind about this. I can't imagine Fallout 3 with last-gen graphics, even if it retains all the gameplay and design. Graphics go a long way in a game like this. But it's not just Fallout 3. Street Fighter IV, Resident Evil 5, Dead Space, Gears of War...the list goes on. So yes, graphics are important. They enhance the game developers' vision and bring it closer to what they set out to do. How many times did we hear developers say, "This wouldn't have been possible in the past." So yeah, it matters.

I'm going to have to disagree with all the people who think that graphics aren't that important to them.

Has anyone really considered what "gameplay" actually is? Isn't gameplay actually the combination of all the basic things that make a game what it is -- controls, level design, storytelling, and graphics?

Think about it, you can't even have any "gameplay" without graphics. So obviously, graphics are an important element of gameplay. And in a case where all other things are equal, it's a no brainer that you would pick the graphically superior game to the graphically inferior game.

Furthermore, all the elements of gameplay feed off of each other. Why are more people attracted to HD games these days than non-HD games? It's because the same games that have the beautiful graphics are usually the same games with the better control schemes, level design, storytelling, etc. That's just the natural evolution of gameplay - better graphics allow the development of better level design, story telling, and control schemes, and vice versa.

It's also a simple truth that if you take away from one of the elements from the equation (e.g., superior graphics ) you get lesser gameplay. Am I saying that all PS3/360 games are superior to all other games simply by the fact that they have superior graphics? No. Graphics is only one element of gameplay. However, it's clear that a PS3/360 game that does everything else right (controls, story, design, etc) plus has superior graphics will be a better experience than a non HD game that does everything else right but has inferior graphics.

Does that mean that you can't enjoy games with lesser graphics? Of course not. But you're kidding yourself if you think that graphics don't have an important impact on the your gameplay experience.

In order

1.Gameplay

2.Story and depending on genre does it have character growth

3.Graphics
