2017 may have had some bad games but then there are some games we had big hopes for. While some of the games this year may have been decent but there others that failed to deliver on their promise. This list takes a look at the games that maybe many of us had hope for but never delivered in their promise.

Rules:

  • European Releases Only

10: Akiba's Beat

Platform: PlayStation 4/PlayStation Vita

Developer: Acquire

Akiba's Beat is honestly not great and so was Akiba's Trip Undead & Undressed but they weren't bad games either just weird games that tried to be as original as they could. In Akiba's Beat's case it means coping the gameplay mechanics and the setting of Persona and the Tales Franchises. Instead of stripping down vampires and people in Akiba's Trip Akiba's Beat had a real time combat system that fed on the combat system from Tales of Xillia 1 & 2 just with a musical beat system where characters can go into Imagine Mode where you can attack your enemies to the beat for massive damage. Instead of being fun though it's rather stiff and not as impactful as it should be. The Tales Series already moved forward with Tales of Berseria which had a fantastic combat system where you can run freely without needing to hold down the free run button, so to go from the combat system of Berseria to then playing a Tales clone based on Xillia's combat system is a big step back. Combine that with a storyline that takes too long to get any decent development going, padding which is often a nuisance and characters that constantly remind you about shops, saving and so forth then you got an RPG that just treats it's players like a baby and feels more of a step back from what made the Tales games fun and what could have been better.

9: Middle-Earth Shadow of War

Platform: PlayStation 4/XBox One/PC

Developer: Monolith Productions

Okay, I know what everyone is asking, how could Middle-Earth Shadow of War be such a disappointment after the excellent Shadow of Mordor game. Answer: Loot Crates and microtransactions, yep that. We wanted this game to be bigger and better and it is, the world is better and the nemesis system has expanded upon but however the game is stretched out by having players pay real money for Loot crates to get the most of it especially towards the end of the game. Talk about going off on the wrong foot.

8: Marvel VS Capcom Infinite

Platform: PlayStation 4/XBox One/PC

Developer: Capcom

Marvel VS Capcom fighting games have been extremely entertaining with both Marvel and Capcom universes pitting themselves against each other but however things got a little underwhelming with this one. Less characters than in the last games, with other characters being later included through DLC, this time this entry goes for two on two fights instead of three on three and lastly the game relies on push combos and stones as well instead of being the over the top fighter that it should be. Quite sad to see a fantastic fighting game series fall from a wound like that.

7: Valkyria Revolution

Platform: PlayStation 4/PlayStation Vita/XBox One

Developer: Media Vision

The beloved strategy RPG games have had a sad life now, the original game on the PS3 was incredible but however jumped to portable with the sequels and it was painful that the third game in the series was never released outside Japan. Hopes where high that Valkyria was coming back to the consoles with a new instalment even if it was going to be a spin off of the main games. Instead what we got was a boring hack n slash gameplay with a very bad game camera, on top of that it has a bad translation and very poor story pacing. Valkyria certainly deserved more better treatment then this.

6: Yooka-Layee

Platform: PlayStation 4/XBox One/PC/Nintendo Switch

Developer: Playtonic Games

Fans of the old Banjo Kazooie games on the Nintendo rejoiced when they a campaign kick starter and it succeeded very well. The game itself got as close to almost capturing that Banjo Kazooie gameplay from the platforming and the whole collectible aspect only that it wasn't enough. It was very repetitive even for a throw back platformer and it had a poor camera and only 5 worlds. It sure captures the look and feel of Banjo Kazooie but the mixed reviews couldn't save what should have been a brilliant throw back nostalgia game.

5: For Honor

Platform: PlayStation 4/XBox One/PC

Developer: Ubisoft Montreal

For Honor looks like a decent hack n slash which should have been a fun game, at least it could have been if it wasn't for the issues regarding the multiplayer matchmaking which was atrocious even at launch day, plenty of other technical problems and of course the kicker which was microtransactions in which was too excessive for this kind of a game.

4: Lawbreakers

Platform: PlayStation 4/PC

Developer: Boss Key Productions

Lawbreakers is like with Battleborn, it just wants to be like OverWatch but it just didn't do all that great. It's not because of any pay walls or loot crates of that nature this time it's because nobody was online playing it and that's a shame. The game itself is pretty entertaining and fun but however most people just happen to check it out for curiosity before they went back to OverWatch. Hey if one game is already popular then it would take another to try and take attention away which is something this game didn't.

3: Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War III

Platform: PC

Developer: Relic Entertainment

Warhammer has focused on the MOBA market with this newest instalment of the series instead of focusing on the real time strategy combat that the series was known for. This change was rather polarizing between gamers and critics alike which left us with a game which does not rather strategic gameplay.

2: Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands

Platform: PlayStation 4/XBox One/PC

Developer: Ubisoft

Wildlands went for an openworld and infact it was said to be biggest open world games that Ubisoft has ever published. This game sure has a very big world to explore such as mountains, forests, desserts and the shooting gameplay is kind of fun but however falls apart due to the narrative, terrible vehicle sections and missions that were just too repetitive.

1: Friday the 13th The Game

Platform: PlayStation 4/XBox One/PC

Developer: Illfonic LCC

We were hoping to finally see the famous horror film icon get a decent video game treatment that he should have deserved after the mess that was Friday the 13th on NES. This game captures the fell of being helpless alongside the felling of murdering but however it was ruined at launch due to the amount of bugs and glitches that made it unplayable in many instances. It didn't have much in content either not even a single player mode where it could have saved this big disappointment but it's too late, it may have gotten a few patches and fixes but the damage has been done making this the most disappointing game.

Do you agree with this list? What other big disappoints did you experience in 2017?
