I found Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald to be the worst true Pokemon games in the series. While LeafGreen and FireRed are probably the best, they're just updated versions of the games you've played already. So you might really want to think about what to choose.
I'd seriously suggest Pearl or Diamond on the DS though...
FireRed/LeafGreen were my favourites. There's more than enough to warrant playing it if you played the originals. I got all 150 on the originals and still played 70+ hours on the remakes.
Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald were definately the worst games in the series, so I'd get them after LG/FR.
Well it depends which pokemon u like. THe leaf green and fire red version have most of the old pokemon with some new ones, and the sapphire/ruby/emerald versions have all the old pokemon and all the new ones. So you should prbly go with the new versions
I will always be a fan of the origianl RBY days, but for the GBA I like Leaf Green, It has similarities to the originals, but It is by no means the same. The addition of the Sevii Islands is one example. I think that if you weigh it against Firered, you do lose some pretty cool pokemon, but overall it is better in mine (and most peoples) opinions. I think that they mostly are al well made and would do you well, I had a lot of them, but I lost all my GBA stuff, so I only own 3 games now, and Leaf green is one of them, probably the one I play the most.

I suggest getting Emerald first, since it's a combination of Sapphire and Ruby. Plus it also has some extra goodies that R/S don't have. FireRed and LeafGreen are also good too, since they include the 1st gen pokemon.
