Gold/Silver, Easily. It added a well desined new batch of Pokemon, introduced to new Pokemon types, introduced night and dayand week days to the series. You actually had a full second quest after the elite four(no Pokemon game has done this since), catching them all was more possible in these version than any of the other.... save for Red/Blue/yeloow of course. Sure, you could port Pokemon from your GBA games in Diamond/Pearl, but I doubt many people kept the GBA Pokemon games seeing as they werent that great and once they are ported to the DS, you cant get them back on the GBA cart. The graphics were actually pretty good in Silver/Gold. Games after barely scratched teir respective system's capabilities. Especialy Diamond/Pearl. Silver/Gold introduced Pokemon happyness and breeding.
Silver and Gold pretty much made the series. After those games no Pokemon game has really done anything to change how you play Pokemon. Ruby/Sapphire did absolutly nothing except add in a lesser batch of Pokemon, two on two battlesand tune of the graphics a bit. And all Diamond/Pearl did was add in an over rated online multiplayer mode, barely and I mean barelyimproved the graphicsand added the worst looking batch of Pokemon ever.
Seriously though, the online play is exactly like local play, just online. Nothing special. Diamond/Pearl got way to much credit.

Yeah I know :)
I just like the original Kanto region and it's pokemon. I don't really like the new pokemon that much, but I've been thinking about getting Diamond/Pearl for DS so I can do online trading and stuff.
