Never heard of the term before and no doubt it points to my ignorance being an exclusive (except for Guild Wars 2) Single Player gamer. Looked around here and couldn't find an explanation--only numerous use of the word. Thanks.

It was a feature on the old Gamespot site. You could make a group and invite people to it and got your own forum. They removed the feature during the site update because not many people used it.

Unions were communities created and ran by GS users. It's basically the equivalent of a public board that you see now. Although the feature itself is gone, there are to be transfers of specific unions to boards for continuity. You can find out more information and keep up to date with the process here: http://www.gamespot.com/forums/bug-reporting-feedback-1000006/save-our-unions-29438636
