Fish Tycoon, (homework assignment) the review of a video game desgin student.

User Rating: 5 | Fish Tycoon 1.0 PC
I started playing Fish Tycoon from Big Fish Games at 4:00 pm on July 21, 2006. Fish Tycoon is Rated E. The Genre is that of Business Strategy, and is available only on the PC. Fish Tycoon is a solo player only, not really much it can do multi-player, because it is a big fish tank. The graphics were not choppy but there wasn’t much that can be done with them, the game looks more like a screen saver. The game is about what you should expect for a simulation game; the only thing that they added was a twist by making it all real time. I would have to say that this is the first of its class to run even when the computer is turned off allowing the game to continue when you are not around. There is no hero, and the story is that all of the fish have disappeared and you own a fish store so you are trying to save the species by breeding and selling the fish until you have discovered the seven magical fish. The game’s biggest strength is also a weakness, it is that it has a twist that allows you to turn off your computer and still have the game running. The reason that this is also a weakness is because if you don’t come back to feed the fish they will die of starvation. Fish Tycoon’s biggest weakness is that it takes so long for your fish to grow old enough to breed and to sell that you sit around getting extremely board. I think that the best feature mentioned on the box is that the game runs when you are not even playing the game. If I could make changes to Fish Tycoon, I would find a way to make the fish grow quicker so that you do not have to sit and wait, and wait, and then wait some more. I think that the things worth remembering about Fish Tycoon are the fact that it is real time, and the time can be paused if you will be gone for a long time. Also, that the game has a button on the bottom of the screen where you can click and it will turn the game into a screen saver. The controls are very simple, you just click on a fish and drag it to the tank that you want it to be in. The audio of Fish tycoon are very basic, there are no voices including voiceovers, and the only music is that of very basic elevator music. The user-interface is extremely good, it has pictures in the stores and the buttons for where you want to go are easy to get to. I would only recommend the game to be who want to try something different because of how long it takes to go it would be ok for an office or a student while they are away but not for someone who just sits around on the computer. I believe that the target audience is that of someone from eight to thirteen, and again from eighteen to twenty two.
