Combination of old-school Dragon-Warrior and Final Fantasy. Don't import if you're not happy reading Japanese.

User Rating: 8.5 | Hikari no 4 Senshi: Final Fantasy Gaiden DS
Hikari no 4 Senshi, despite its name "Final Fantast Gaiden", the game is a more similar to the early Dragon Warrior series.

The game gives you a lot of freedom right off the start with very little direction. Players have to wander around town and talk to NPC to learn about the story and where to go next. The information you learn from NPC can be very vital, even information like the only way to defeat a certain boss will be given to the player via NPC dialogue. This can be really hard at the moment if you can not understand Japanese.

While traveling the world, each party member can carry only 15 items with no central storage space. Spell books and equipments are stored within these 15 spaces as well. There are storage service you can only access in town. This means you really have to think hard what you want to take with you on your adventure.

Old time RPG players will be very familiar with the systems memtioned above. There are quite a lot of people I talked to that were very disappointed but for myself I am enjoying this system very much.

During battle, each character will have 3 fixed commands and 6 empty slots for customization. The 3 fixed commands are attack, charge and item. The other 6 can be equipped with spells or abilities gained from Crowns.

Crowns are little hats characters wear to change their job.

AP - Action Point. Instead of MP or Mana, each character has an AP pool of 5. Every turn of battle, the character gains 1 AP. Using the "charge" command will give the character another extra 1 AP. Every action the character does will cost AP. Even using spells in the world map will still cost AP.

AP is a very interesting system. Because each character can always charge up AP, mages can be casting spells through out the journey and be useful even if it's a 100 floors of dungeons.
No kidding, there really are optional dungeons with a hundred floors.

Battle turn-base. Players cannot choose the target for their actions. While attacking, the character will choose their target depending on the "range" of their weapon. Close range, he'll attack enemies on the front row. Long range, he'll attack the ones far in the back. Luckily characters using weapon of the same range will focus fire on the same target.
Healing may sound a bit troublesome but so far the game has done a great job choosing the target for me. I was able to heal and cure status ailment without problem through out the game.

Major draw back : there seem to be only 1 single save available. I play this game alone so it's ok, but if you want to share this game with your friends or families, this might be a huge problem.

The game has been very appealing to me so far. It's very cute with a lot going on. I haven't completed the game yet so I cannot comment on the replay value.

My final word is back to my original quote. Don't import this game if you're not happy reading Japanese. To enjoy this game, you have to read. A lot.
