This port of Final Fantasy II meets its purpose; a neat on-the-go RPG.

So Square Enix decided it would be a great idea to remake their first 2 titles of the Final Fantasy franchise and release them on the PSP round about the same time. For those who haven't already experienced the origins, or to those who want to re-live them, you won't be disappointed. However, don't expect nothing more than updated sprites and a few minor tweaks to the two titles, especially Final Fantasy II.

In Final Fantasy II you take the role of Firion, a young rebel who seeks revenge on the destruction of his home village caused by none other than the Emperor himself. The very same Emperor who is causing havok around the world and with permission from the Princess, Firion and his friends help to save the world. The story remains pretty straight forward, because unlike later titles in the franchise, Final Fantasy I and II never really had the most memorable of stories, nor the lengthiness either. Final Fantasy II can be completed within 15 - 20 hours or shorter if you miss out on exploring dungeons and reading more dialogue, etc. Although this might seem a good length of time to those new to the RPG genre, hardcore fans of the series, on the other hand, will be disappointed with the lack of side-missions or extra dungeons with secrets to find.

The problem with this port Final Fantasy II is that you can't help but feel more could've been added given the fact that the franchise has evolved to much during its long running years. Yes, there are a couple of dungeons that veterans of the original game might notice, and there's a few other noticeable tweaks, excluding of course the remastered soundtrack and high-resolution sprites, but once it's over you'll find there's no reason to rush back and relook over things you might not have noticed the first time through. But all this said, Final Fantasy II does its purpose which is to port and update Final Fantasy II to the PSP, and it does exactly that.

If you're looking to re-live the oldies again, or if you never got the chance to; Final Fantasy II on the PSP is worth looking at. Despite its lack of overall unique feel and finish in comparison the later titles, the game does show the origins of one of the biggest RPG franchises in the world.
