Unreal Tournament Mods
By T. Byrl Baker

Excessive CTF4
Creators: David Catmull (CTF4), Jason "Cicero" Taylor (Mr. Pants' Excessive Overkill for Unreal Tournament)

This mod is a blend of CTF4 and Excessive Overkill - and it's over the top.

This double whammy fuses the frantic four-team action of the CTF4 mod with the insanity that is Mr. Pants' Excessive Overkill to create a capture-the-flag experience like no other. The various options CTF4 offers add just as much to the gameplay as the additional teams. There are settings that force you to haul your dropped flags all the way back to base instead of simply touching them or that only let you grab flags from a specific team at any given time.

The mod lets you apply the new scoring options and other gameplay features to two-team matches, but it definitely works best on special four-team maps. There are several such maps at the site to get you started. Many are conversions of popular maps like Facing Worlds, but you can forget everything you learned while playing on the originals, as CTF4 opens up a multitude of new strategies and tactical considerations.

CTF4's options can be combined in a variety of ways to keep the game fresh, but the mod's integration with the popular Excessive Overkill mod really takes things over the top. How about an impact hammer that explodes with the force of a redeemer when you hold down the button for five seconds? Or how about a minigun that hurls exploding rounds? All the weapons are pumped up, but at the same time, players become harder to kill due to the constant regeneration of health and armor, the absence of headshots, and the removal of self-damage. It adds immensely to the energy and challenge associated with a typical CTF4 game, and we can only hope similar mod combos are offered in the future.

Infiltration

It's time to play cat and mouse with real-world firearms.

Your aim had better be good, because Infiltration is one of the most unforgiving mods you'll ever face. Featuring nine weapons all patterned after real-world firearms - from the Beretta M92F pistol to the 50-caliber Robar RC50 sniper rifle - Infiltration turns Unreal Tournament's wild cartoon action into a harrowing game of cat and mouse. Just hitting anything requires skill - a kick from the weapons will spoil your aim if you're not quick on the controls. And if you are unfortunate enough to miss, that bot you shot at won't return the favor.

They are downright frightening on the higher difficulty levels. Infiltration comes with a complete set of controls that let you tweak every aspect of its operation, and we had a hard time going back to the normal Unreal Tournament weapons after a few rounds of blasting camo-clad opponents.

Take the red pill - very, very slowly.

As the title of this mod implies, Lazy Matrix brings the slow-motion physics of the sci-fi movie to your unreal tournaments. Does this mean that you can dodge bullets? You got it. Under normal circumstances, the mod slows down projectiles, but it doesn't affect the speed of the characters. Amazingly enough, even though you can visually follow the path of individual bullets, you can still hit your opponents (and be hit, as we soon found out) and sidestep incoming rounds if you're fast enough.

Things get really interesting when you hear Morpheus' voice saying, "Free your mind," and everything slows to a smooth crawl. In this mode, movement speed is reduced and projectiles are slowed to the point that rockets leave ghostly trails, and sniper rounds can take a few seconds to close the gap between you and your prey. Bullets create the tunnel of concentric rings made famous by the movie, and the sight of these trails crisscrossing while eight or more combatants are running around at the speed of cold molasses must be seen to be appreciated.

Killing means living in this unique mod.

There are plenty of mods out there designed to separate players into predators and prey, but Minions of Destruction is the one that we load up the most. The first player to rack up a few frags transforms into the Minion, a fast and tough creature with the unfortunate trait of losing health constantly unless you regularly frag other players. Once someone is branded as the Minion, gameplay shifts from a free-for-all deathmatch to a terrifying horror movie. As the Minion, you must go on a psychotic rampage looking for other players to kill so you don't die, and to carry out your work you get new weapons that are much more powerful than anything the other players are packing. If you aren't the Minion, you spend much of your time avoiding the beast until you can round up another player or two and sink some combined firepower into it.

This mod adds some really tough monsters into the mix - the more, the merrier!

It's hard enough to navigate levels and keep track of everything that's going on when you are playing against bots or human competition, but what would happen if dozens of creatures hostile to everyone were dropped on the map? Monster Madness answers that question by populating levels with all sorts of nasties from Unreal, including Skaarj warriors, Titans, and even Queens.

You get frags for killing the monsters (more than one if it's a particularly tough beast), and you can select what types of monsters will appear and how often they respawn (if at all). The chaos that results from having multiple monsters on the map while all the usual suspects are gunning for you isn't hard to imagine.

NBAntiCamper
Creator: N. "Beppo" Bogenrieder

In this mod, you're not a happy camper.

NBAntiCamper proves that the best things really do come in small packages. A mere 10KB download revolutionized our games by turning campers into marked targets. Sit in one area too long, and UT marks you as a camper. All enemy bots on the level then converge on your position with guns ablaze. Your human adversaries will also find out exactly where you are, which can spoil your plans in a hurry. There are still opportunities to snipe and create ambushes, but NBAntiCamper does a great job of encouraging the kind of fast play that makes a first-person shooter fun for everyone.
