Same Ole Far Cry But Buggy As Hell

User Rating: 5 | Far Cry 4 PS4

I had high hopes for this game. I've played other Far Cry games and enjoyed most. But this new iteration of the game frustrated me to no end with bugs galore and a boring story. Games are supposed to immerse you into their reality but that wasn't the case with Far Cry 4. A list of a few larger issues:

1. Horrid trigger points for GUI interaction. To open a simple chest, zip line, or scale up a wall, you must stand in exactly the correct location to trigger the GUI to interact. Hence the player misses opportunities to interact. This reminds me of the old 2D games where they'd hide the hotspot on the screen. So...'hunt the hotspot' is now 'hunt the trigger spot' in Far Cry 4. And beyond that, sometimes the trigger spots weren't in logical locations, ie, maneuver around to the back of something in order to interact. The reasoning behind this harder interaction isn't clear. Could be a buggy trigger system in the engine or the devs just wanted to make you work harder to get a reward...

2. Mediocre texturing of environment. It's hard to know where to jump to or scale up to when the developers used the same textures for an entire mountain. Everything has the same gray with black spots texturing. Finding jump-able areas required close study of a mountain or hill because it all looked the same...

3. Dull character and story. The main character could have remained nameless and it wouldn't have changed anything. The start of the game is exciting, but then it winds down into numerous runs across long distances to find or do something.

4. Combat was awkward at times with a noticeable drop in frame rate (PS4) when several enemies appear. Camera movement slowed to a crawl during some combat sequences, which tends to get the player easily killed.

Overall it appears that the developers had a mediocre story with not much game play (aka more of a DLC than a complete title) and simply added a ton of commonly used elements to extend play time. For example, the simple act of removing a bit of fog of war is accomplished by traversing large distances and climbing radio towers with the tower then broadcasting a pirated signal. A lot of work to simply open the map a bit more...
