excellent racing mechanics, solid gameplay, all substance with no unnecessary flair

User Rating: 9 | F1 2009 WII
As the other user reviewers have said, this game is outstanding. Yes, it is not a super-hardcore simulation-level reproduction where you have to worry about adequate tire temperature and subtle nuances of real-life F1 racing. But the racing mechanics are elegant, easy to learn but hard to master, and overall a great joy to play with. I've played so many racing games that disappointed me but this one, I am glad to say, was outstanding. If you are a rookie driver, there are driving aids like a racing line, steering assists, and braking assists to help you. You can turn them all on and off, as desired. I think this game does an incredible job in falling just between simulator-level and arcade-level, so that you definitely need to refine your driving technique and the difficulty increases as you play, so you need to improve and it is by no means a push-over, BUT it is never frustrating and despairingly difficult like a simulation-quality game can be. I've played countless games that failed to pull off this delicate balancing act, so I am very very happy that I finally found one that executed this well.

Also, this game faithfully reproduces all the F1 racecourses; the graphics are great; the roar of the engines is beautiful. The two-player season mode is good, and all the different game modes (quick race, race weekend with qualifiers and a grand prix, 1 season, or career mode, and challenge modes) are varied and will keep you playing and improving for a long time.

Final thought - the thrill you get when engaging your KERS system on a straightaway on the last lap to desperately attack with your last ounce of horsepower has been the best videogame experience I have had in a long time. I felt like I was taking a risk when I bought this game new and at full price, but I am totally satisfied with it.
