A personal treasure.

User Rating: 9 | F-Zero X N64
Here we have it. F-Zero X. I have been playing the original and GX for years, but I just recently got my hands on this little beauty at a garage sale. Enough about my pointless little story, let's talk F-Zero!

Graphics: 6/10
I have to say that I was moderately disappointed with the graphics of this game. The racers are cartoonish and the background is generally fog. However, some cars are more detailed than others and the option to choose your color is a nice touch.

Sound: 10/10
This game honestly has some of the best music I have heard from the Nintendo 64. The general style is Hard Rock/Metal with accents of Techno and I love it. I can't tell you how great the music is. Some tracks are metal remixes of already catchy tunes from the first game. The others are all unique and mind-blowing.

Gameplay: 9/10
Now, this is what really matters. The gameplay of this game is downright great. The controls are smooth and there are only occasional losses of control when playing on some of the trickier tracks. With that aside, this game has the best gameplay of any racing game on the N64 hands down.

Replayability: 9/10
Okay, the reason one would buy an N64 game in this day and age is because they want something meatier than what Nintendo provides on the Wii. This game definitely delivers in this category. You will want to come back again and again not only because of the great gameplay, but also because of the difficulty. You may notice that I ranked the game as "Just Right" further up in my review, but that is actually an average. The earlier tracks and difficulties are easy enough that you can get in first or second without too much hastle. On the later courses, however, you will find yourself fighting just to make it in the top ten out of the thirty racers participating. This gives the game a good balance for those beginners in hardcore racing games and also the true veterans of the N64.

Summary: 9/10
Overall, this is a fantastic game. I highly recommend it to anyone who owns an N64. And to those who don't own a Nintendo 64, I beg of you, buy the console. There are too many fantastic titles to pass this beauty up. Back to the game. F-Zero X stands out upon all racing titles available for the N64. It's fun, fast, and frantic. The ability to attack you opponents and knock them out of the race to give you a higher minimum position is a nice addition. The "Death Race" mode focuses completely on this. The multiplayer is very, very good as well. For my final words: Buy this game. It is a must-own classic. Search garage sales, flea markets, and the deepest bowels of eBay for this masterpiece.
