Too many loading screens, constant lag, PS2 graphics, horrible pacing problems, non-existent fear... etc etc

User Rating: 3 | F.E.A.R. PS3
To put it simply, this game feels like if you were playing it on a PC that had a mere 40% of the required horsepower to run the game properly. The PS3 graphics are the equivalent of the PC's "Very Low", the loading screens are almost constant and take forever to go away. Here's the typical rundown of the experience :

-Loading screen
-Very short cut-scene
-Loading screen
-Random and retarded enemies jump on you, which means LAG TIME
-Loading screen
-A cheap scare, most of them won't even scare you
-Load load load !

When you're not in the middle of one of the above, you're listening to your useless teammates giving you various orders to continue the boring story. But, good luck understanding anything of what they're saying. There is way too much noise on the radio, without regards to the distance. Ever played Halo 2 and complained about how you couldn't understand what the hell Johnson was saying? Well, this is about 3 times worse.

Every times you encounter an enemy squad, garbles of their radio chatting will come to ears, completely throwing off any kind of atmosphere you were trying to build up. Lag gets worse to the point you can't aim anything. But is that actually a problem? Not really, because all you have to do to kill the enemies is stick to a corner, flank and spray. AI sucks and unfortunately, that brand of unoriginal soldiers are all you'll be shooting at. Yup, that's right, there is only one kind of enemy in the whole damned game. Isn't that next gen for ya?

Bullet time/slowing the time down is cool for a while but it quickly gets boring, it puts too much in the hands of the players and makes things unbalanced. It was great in Max Payne because enemies actually posed a challenge but it's totally useless in F.E.A.R. the game was actually a tad better when I stopped using it.

Graphics are a total letdown and look like PS2. Every character models are very blurry with an incredibly low polygon count that makes them look like Lego's, there's close to no specular whatsoever on the textures, maps can't get more linear and scripted events of ghosts trying to scare you are the work of a 5 years old. Here, for example, every times you are outside, go ahead and take a look down the streets. Chances are VERY high all you will see is a pure lack of the streets themselves, nothing but black void with floating buildings. Skyboxes are so blurry, it's actually hard to say if there are any clouds. Animation is very outdated and stiff, too.

The game isn't scary for two reasons. First, the ghosts suck. Secondly, the over-abundance of weapons, ammo and medpacks makes you feel invincible and for a good reason : the ghosts never try to hurt you. You just go right through them.

This game was good when it came out a few years ago, mainly due to the fact it lacked competitors. Buying this today is a total joke.
