Why Konami, Why!

User Rating: 4.5 | Evolution Skateboarding PS2
When you first look at this game, it's just another typical skateboarding game. This game is a very poor attempt of Konami to get into the genre. In fact Evolution Skateboarding is merely an imitation of the highly popular Tony Hawks Pro Skater series. Despite the good quality graphics of the game and some extra features, the poor gameplaydoesnt give this game any life at all.

Evolution Skateboarding's gameplay is just like any other skateboarding game. Here you control your own skater by building your own deck and making signiture moves or combos. Of course if your having a hard time on your costumize character, you can always choose from the roster of professional skaters like Danny Way,Arto Saari and Stevie Williams. In the Tony Hawks games, the control is very sharp and accurate. But on this game, it's the other way around. It's very slow, i mean very slow, and sometimes it is not responsive. Everytime you enter a level, you have several number of challenges to complete and you have a time lmit for you to complete this objectives. It's either you get a certain high score or by searching some items in the level. Speaking of levels, there several wide level areas that you can skate. This includes from the neon streets of Tokyo to the deep dungeons of an ancient castle. As you complete the challenges, you can go head to head with the boss of the level. This feature is the first in any skateboarding game but it's just a little addition that the developers added to make this game a little bit worthy.

Graphically speaking, the game features spectacular graphics and environment. The skaters themselves are pretty much designed although some of them are not that realistic. The levels are also detailed but some areas are not that long and doesnt require much exploring. Many of these levels originated from other Konami games that most fans will surely recognize. The sound of the game is just fair. It's got some decent soundtracks from popular bands and it's quite good in my opinion. Evolution Skateboarding got some little extra features like the option to skate characters from the Metal Gear series. Although these characters are not much of a secret at all since you can unlocked them easily by via a cheat code. I find it less interesting but still it's good to see Solid Snake and Raiden on a skateboard performing different kinds of tricks. But despite of these bonus features, the game still doesnt escape from it's terrible gameplay. It not very impressive at all.

In conclusion, this game is not a worthy competitor to the Tony Hawks series. If you want to take a look of this unimpressive game, i suggest you make this game a rental, just for the sake of seing Solid Snake on this game. Please Konami, just stick with the action/adventure genre.
