The best, mature-player MMO in existence.

User Rating: 9.5 | EVE Online: Dominion PC
If you are a pure adrenaline junky, FPS or action game player then stay away from this till you are older and have reduced that craving. This is not for you.

If you are patient and enjoy an amazingly complex game which you will still not fully understand 2 months in, then come and see. It will keep you glued for months if not years.

I have been playing the game for 1.5 months. I am still a noob, and that is not for lack of knowledge. I am much more experienced than a first couple of weeks noob, but you will be a noob for at least 2 - 3 months just due to the size of the game. the possibilities are truly frightening.

I mine asteroids, fight pirates, do missions, haul cargo, protect others doing peaceful activities, fight in corporate wars, refine goods, create products, run a small trading shop, join others in all these activities and I have still not really seen much more than 4% - 5% of the universe, if that.

The economy is mainly player driven and the possibilities will definitely keep you going for several years, before you have explored even half of it, assuming that that is nearly all that you do.

All upgrades, add-ons, universe expansions, major or minor are free. CCP seems to be running a business that they enjoy, rather than a business that they are trying to exploit every cent out of. That is part of what makes it so superb.

The best part is the skill training system. Skill training continues after you shut the game down. I work. You can set it up to train whilst you are at work and training may have finished when you get back. There is a slight restriction in the training queue system, but it has already been vastly improved. This is actually a good thing, as it helps limit imbalances.

Update (1)

I have now been playing for 3 months. I am a minor established member of my corp, but still a long way from understanding more than maybe 8% - 10% of the game universe.

I have chosen an early "Easy" path and have been training as a combat pilot and salvager. The latter finances my activities. I salvage space wrecks that I find, or create :-). I sometimes join fleets of others for the sole purpose of scavenging their kills. It pays well, if you know what you are doing.

I am also a wartime squad leader, when we have a war declared on us, developing skills that help those in my squad.

Over Christmas I will start my career as a trader of goods. The reason for the wait is that I am training a broad set of skills rather than focusing on one field.

Still very much enjoying the game. As I type this, offline from the game, my character is training a skill that will take me 12 days to train. I am 5 days into it. I could get better by buying implants. That's an idea.

There have been two major game upgrades and a complete game expansion in the time that I have been playing. No cost. Awesome.

More to come.

Update (2)

In the 4 months that I have played I have been in 4 wars with other corporations.

I am now part of the Navy of my alliance, which includes several corporations. I am training skills towards specialist combat ships. I decided to join in order to get more guidance in the field of equipping combat ships and to be more involved in the combat side of things.

Now that we are at peace, I have started that trading career that I was talking about. The vast amount of information available to you to help you make trading decisions rivals a low end real life stock exchange. I love it.

Update (3)

I have now been playing the game for 1.33 YEARS. I still love it, and I am not alone. There are now regularly over 50,000 players online at any one time, with subscriptions now well over 350,000. Although this is well below WOW, it is still very impressive for a game that is this deep and complex. The subscriber numbers keep rising.

Since I started, the game has come out with 4 expansions (Including this one [Dominion]) which you download for free, every time.

I am still part of the Navy of my alliance, but I fly advanced combat ships. I am now a respected senior member of the player corporation that I am in (Eve University - 1,300 Player members). I am also part of an elite group in the alliance that has established a large exploration outpost in "Wormhole Space". The latter is an upgrade that brought into existence wormholes that lead to dangerous parts of space, with an ancient race in control of these.

There are so many new things in the game, including a completely new class of ships, powerful, but that can still be taken down. This is an important part of the expansions, as the developers do not want to create a vast imbalance in the game.

More news to come.

Sorry for the delay. 4+ years into this game now. Still hooked, still playing.

I have now become one of the more veteran players in the game, although there are many that have been playing this for even longer than I have. I am now in a PvP dedicated corporation called "Agony Unleashed"". The aim of the corp is to be involved in PvP, as much as possible, with no interest in anything else.

In the interim period, since my last update, I have been in an industrial corp, in a large alliance and a major coalition faction, fought in wars with hundreds of ships on the battlefields, been part of a couple of Titan (Largest ship in the game) kills. I have a solo mining operation with my 4 "alternative" toons, who also run planet-mining.It remains a fascinating universe, most of which I just have not had the time to explore, despite logging in regularly.

I have lectured at the Eve University, where I first started, telling the new recruits (both to the corporation and to the game) what there is to do in Eve and some of the things that you need to learn to survive.

The expansions keep coming, and they continue to be free. If you join the game keep an eye out for my "Main", "Joe Lost", and give me a wave in local, if you are passing through the same system. For now you will find me mostly in Kamela, enjoying the delights of "Faction Warfare", fighting for the Amarr Empress against the Minmatar scum.

See you soon.
