Bares little resemblance to its arcade predessor and consequently ends up mediocre.

I vaguely remember E-SWAT from its arcade days. I remember my older brother playing a game where you start out as a regular patrol cop then move up in the ranks until you eventually become some sort of mechanical super cop. The game looked cool and I was young and loved the movie Robocop. When I saw that it was available on the Genesis, I found a copy and bought it. I was disappointed that it bore little resemblance to the arcade game and was more of a watered down port using the E-SWAT name for recognition.

The graphics are you average Genesis variety; there really isn’t anything exemplary about them. The levels seemed bland and uninspired, which takes its toll on the overall fun. The sound department doesn’t fare any better. The music and sound effects are utilitarian and do just enough. The game play rounds out the mediocrity. The controls felt stiff, especially when you don the E-SWAT armor. The game design doesn’t do much to make the game stand out from other 2d side scrollers.

E-SWAT could have been a better game, but in the end just ends up being a chore to play. I really tried to like this game, but it fails to stand out in any category. I have played worse games, but I have also played much better.
