Wow, it's very hard to describe what makes this such an incredible and fun gaming experience. Set in various fantasy places on Earth, Earthbound stars Ness, a boy with strange psychic powers, who has to save the world from the threat of the evil Giygas, an alien who in the future has already taken over the world. Along the way, he develops PSI abilities and teams up with Paula, Jeff, and Poo. This is a well-constructed, turn-based RPG. You can use normal attacks, items, Pray (Paula), and PSI powers to fight. You can also equip items which supplement your strength. Fights are altogether pretty simple to follow, but a wide arsenal of items, weapons, prayers, and PSI, the action is mostly exciting. However, it oftentimes becomes extremely repetitive and unexciting, especially in dungeons where hoards of somewhat-easily-defeated enemies swarm you. What really makes the game magical is its unconventional and outlandish humor. Some parts might actually make you laugh out loud. The graphics seem lifeless in many dungeons, but it's made up for by inspiring colorful environments. The music takes it up another level, compelling several emotions through hearing alone. Aside from being a classic RPG, this is a mystically immersive and enchanting game. All in all, Earthbound is a must play for RPG-lovers, but be ready for a fight. It's rare here in 2006, and you might have to pay a pretty penny, but you won't regret it!
