Dynasty Warriors Next wasn't a game I was super excited about when I had my Vita. The style of these games just usually isn't for me. But when I gave it a try, I was very surprised. Not only is the gameplay solid, but the customization and storyline are much more than I could have ever wanted in this sort of game.

GAMEPLAY - This game has your typical Dynasty Warriors gameplay with a couple of Vita twists. Each person has special touchscreen moves they can use once they've killed enough enemies. There are also boss battles that, while can be very intense and fun, are sometimes very tedious and cheap. Unfortunately a lot of the time it just depends on what equipment you have on for these fights, because basic equipment in later boss fights makes the game insanely difficult. For the most part though, I really enjoyed the gameplay. There are also modifiers you can use to make slow units faster or characters who deal low damage deal much higher damage. Then there is a skirmish mode where you and an opponent take turns attacking each other's territories, which I found to be the most fun of the entire package. That is, aside from the customization. This was what kept the game fun for me long after I beat it. - 9/10

STORY - The story here is actually really well done. There are three major factions you switch between, and two of them had really well-developed characters. The third wasn't that way, but it was also the strongest, which added to making it legit. Basically the whole game is a fight for who will control the whole land, and it is a long story to get through. I enjoyed it for the most part though. - 7.5/10

GRAPHICS - The graphics are quite good for a Vita game. Sometimes it would be hard to see things when surrounded by enemies, but this is mostly due to the poor camera. - 8/10

SOUND - Everything from the heavy metal soundtrack to the voice acting is really well done here. Hearing the roar of the crowd as you capture bases while heavy metal is playing really made this game feel epic. - 10/10

LENGTH/REPLAY VALUE - While the campaign isn't really worth replaying, it is lengthy, and there is a lot to do once you're done with it. There are also multiple levels of difficulty. - 8/10

BOTTOM LINE - This is the first Dynasty Warriors game I've really sat down to play since the PSOne era, and I'm happy to say I had a great time with it. Everything from the customization to the story to the extra modes is so much more than I could have asked for in a game that at first glance seems so repetitive and dull. While it can get that way, it does a good job of mixing things up while maintaining its identity. This is one of the few Vita exclusives I've played so far that I really enjoyed, and I would recommend picking it up if you have the system. - 8.5/10
