User Rating: 9.1 | Dungeon Explorer TG16
In the interest of full disclosure, I owned this game on the original Turbografx 16 Super CD-Rom system. It has lost none of its charm on the virtual console. Dungeon Explorer pits you and a potential army of up to four other adventuerers against the evil Natas. A story that involves Judas and Lucifer's name spelled backwards is not exactly compelling, but the title compensates for this with its ability to get the player's adrenaline pumping. It does this through gameplay, music, and proper difficulty curve. Some complain that Dungeon Explorer is too challenging. They are wrong. The title grows more and more difficult all the way to the end. Neophytes would find this to be frustrating, but most of us will be drawn into the dungeons and not want to leave.

An explorer of the critter-filled labyrinths that this game features cannot help but be moved by the game's memorable soundtrack. Alternately brooding and exhilarating, the music will stay with you long after the game is over. I would place this title on my top twenty list of classic game soundtracks, and I have played hundreds of classic games.

Listen to the tunes and work your way through the dungeons. Feel free to also appreciate the gameplay. Although this is more of an action title than an adventure, there is a certain element of puzzle solving as the player tries to handle the plethora of monsters that approach from all directions. Think Tetris with a 'tude. Dungeon Explorer was one of the more impressive HuCard titles, and it has aged well to stand as one of the more impressive Virtual Console titles. Now let's hope they bring back Turbografx CD games, which are Hudson's very best. If they do, be sure to check out Beyond Shadowgate, Y's Book I and II, Vasteel, Loom, and Cosmic Fantasy 2. Until then, there are dungeons to explore!
