A graphic novel style story that is clearly aimed for mature audiences.

User Rating: 6 | Driver: Renegade 3DS

The story follows hot shot, driver Tanner on his wild ride through the seedy side of New York. There are pimps, hookers, drugs, lots of violence and lots of bad language. While the story is only 20 missions (missions are about 5 minutes each), don't expect much more than 2-3 hours from the story.

Fortunately there is more than just the Story Mode of Driver Renegade. There is a Career Mode which includes roughly 84 events spread out over 7 different race variations (12 for each of the 7 race types). The addition of the Career Mode greatly extends the replayability of Driver Renegade with the chance to improve your time or score over the 84 events. Along with the Story and Career Mode, your Garage can house 50 different cars that are gradually unlocked as you progress through the Story and Career Modes.

Driver Renegade boasts some decent graphics and the 3D is well done. The city is nicely created and includes many roads and back alleys to race on. Controls for the game are alright considering that I'm used to the modern control scheme for most racers. Most modern racers allow you to use the two shoulder buttons for break and gas. Driver Renegade has two action buttons assigned to those. Its not a deal breaker by any means especially considering the necessary buttons needed to perform the side-swiping actions. It begins to make sense why the buttons are assigned the way they are after a short time. Unfortunately you are not allowed to change the controls at all. Also there is only one driving camera, that is adequately funtional, but it would be cool to see a first person or cockpit view in 3d. Strangely enough there is also no rear-view camera for checking behind your car. I found myself missing a rear-view camera more than once. Strange??? Maybe its there and I just can't find it.

All in all I am satisfied with Driver Renegade. The game includes good graphics and 3D, a good story, a beefy career mode, a big city and a 50 car roster. On the negative side there should be more than one control scheme and there should also be more driving cameras as well. The final complaint is that this title should not have been more than $29.99. Considering I've purchased slightly better racing games on my Iphone for no more than $6.99 and some for $0.99. This game really should be cheaper. Pick it up on sale is my advice. But if you can't wait to get some MATURE, 3D racing in the palm of your hands then definitely pick up Driver Renegade and burn some rubber.
