Surely you would think that a good adventure game could be made out of Dragon Ball Z, right? Wrong.

I'm not a big anime fan. I would much rather watch shows like Family Guy, or the Simpsons. However, one anime that has caught my eye as a kid and even now is Dragon Ball Z. It's so destructive and fast-paced. Surely you would think that a good adventure game could be made out of it, right? Wrong.

Atari really should have looked at their game a bit more before they decided to sell it. It is riddled with bugs. On some levels, some objects have no collision detection. I was once able to fly through a giant rock. This could have something to do with the game's "fully destructible environments". Fully destructible, eh? Seems to me the only thing that is destructible is rocks. That and being able to hurl your enemy into a mountain and seeing it explode, which is one of the cool points of the game, but who cares? You can do that in Budokai.

Z-coins, the currency of DBZ: Sagas, allows you to buy special powerups for your characters. Sometimes it is required that you buy these powerups to complete a level. It would be nice if the Z-coins were actually possible to get! Some coins are floating so high up in the air that you actually have to formulate a strategy to get them. You can't reach them by jumping from the ground, or hovering. No, you have to find a ledge, jump off it, and hope to god you're high up enough in the air to reach that coin. Maybe it's just me not knowing how to fly properly, but I'd say this in the most pain in the ass gathering of coins I've ever seen. The game also wants you to take advantage of their seemingly fully destructible environments, so sometimes coins are hidden in rocks. Health and Ki capsules may also be hidden in these rocks too. Lame.

Another problem (and probably the most frustrating) with DBZ: Sagas is the frame rate. The game slows down immensely while you are fighting multiple Saibamen, and makes it almost impossible to auto-aim. The auto-aiming is very inaccurate as well, and has a very boring triangular health bar for the enemy.

I suppose I've taken on a lot of the bad points of the game, so now I will go onto the good ones. The sound is good in this game. It features Dragon Ball Z music, probably mostly taken from the show. Voice acting is pretty good as well. Again, probably taken from the show. Other than that, the sound effects are decent. But nothing spectacular here folks. Just a rehash of the same stuff you've already seen.

Another good point is that it has the DBZ license. While not necessarily a good game, it does have your favorite characters from the DBZ show. You have to be a specific person for each level, you don't get to choose like in Budokai, which sucks, but oh well.

Overall, this game sucks. If you are a fan of DBZ, play Budokai instead. It may not be an adventure game like this is, but you will have a lot more fun than playing this disappointing, buggy mess of a game.
