Enjoyable game, could have been better

I had played Doom before downloading and playing the demo of Doom 3. I thought the demo was fun. Much like the original Doom, it was, for the most part, one man fighting through the forces of Hell. I loved the incredible firepower of the Sentry Bot, which would protect you as you moved to various locations. Then, the demo stopped working. When I saw a copy of Doom 3: BFG Edition in a store, I bought it right after checking to make sure it would work with my computer. When I started playing the Doom 3 campaign, it was a decent game with good graphics, but there were a number of differences that made me feel a bit let-down, and some things I just found annoying:

You can no longer get the Plasma Gun, one of the most powerful weapons available, early in the game. In the demo, you could pick up a PDA in Mars City, enter a lock code, and grab a Plasma Gun.

I thought they might consider giving you armor with a helmet since it seems strange that you can run across the surface of Mars without one. Also, in the original Doom, co-designer John Romero stated of the character "it's supposed to be YOU." The helmet was there largely to conceal the character's face so you knew you were the character.

As for Resurrection of Evil, the opening scenes make the character seem stupid. "Nothing has been down here for thousands of years. This is a sealed chamber, looks like it was meant to stay sealed. Hey! What is that weird-looking thing inside? Wait, let me just pull my helmet off to get a better look."

In The Lost Mission, there is the same thing seen in movies like Aliens and Predator, as well as the video game Area 51: "Nothing moving on the surface. Area must be secure. Nothing could possibly be above us..."

While these things still annoy me, Doom 3 is a fun game, as is The Lost Mission. Including Doom and Doom II was certainly a good idea for Doom 3: BFG Edition. Though I have some difficulty playing Resurrection of Evil, and, to a lesser extent, The Lost Mission, partially because it seems id Software wanted to make the enemies much harder to take down, the overall gameplay seems decent.
