The arcade classic, stripped down and way to simplified.

Donkey Kong for the Atari 2600 is a sad example of a great game. In the arcade version, there are four levels, but in this version, the graphics have been over simplified, and two of the four stages have been taken out. I understand that the processing power of the 2600 was limited, but come on. Donkey Kong looks like the Devil, and his girlfriend looks like a rag doll. That's enough about the graphics, how about the game play?

The game play is interesting, but since there are only two levels and they alternate, it gets old fast. The first level is Mario trying to rescue his Girlfriend at a construction site. You walk across beams and climb up ladders to get to her while Donkey Kong is throwing barrels at you. Actually the barrels look like giant Ritz Crackers. You have to jump over the barrels and finally rescue the girl.
The second level is much the same but you have to remove rivets from some structure. In this screen your enemies are fireballs. They move back and forth trying to kill Mario, but are pretty easy to avoid.
There is a power up in the form of a hammer, but I find it easier to just jump all of the enemies. The only thing hammering the enemy does is get you more points.
The sound effects are standard Atari fare, but the one when you jump over the barrel is classic. That is one of my favorite sound effects ever!

There isn't much else to say about this game. It is the same two screens over and over, but with slightly harder game play. It's not a bad game, but it gets very monotonous.
