When there's trouble, call D.W.

User Rating: 7.5 | Disney's Darkwing Duck NES
Darkwing Duck for the NES is one of those platformer/shooter games. There were a lot of games like that back in the NES era, so Darkwing probably just blended in with the rest of them. It's nowhere near a perfect game, but it's far from bad too.

The shooting aspect of the game is done fairly well. D.W. can only shoot in front of him, but he can shoot while ducking, jumping, and while hanging on ledges. There are lots of power ups in the game, and they stack. You can switch between your power ups by pressing select. All of your power ups have ammo, clearly indicated on the screen, but your initial weapon has unlimited ammo. There are a ton of enemies to dispose of in the game, and they all vary in size, speed, and abilities (shooting, flying etc).

The platforming leaves a bit to be desired. Unlike Mario, D.W. doesn't gain speed or momentum when he runs, and he also moves pretty slowly. There is a lot of grab-jumping in the game, such as jumping from rope-to-rope to get across large pitfalls. This aspect is a little difficult because the game is fairly picky about the grabbing. You need to be almost dead-center of the place you want to grab, or else D.W. will take a fall. D.W. also has a move where he can hide behind his cape to defend himself against enemy projectiles, preformed by pressing up on the D-pad. This move is more of a nuisance than anything because if you press up on the D-pad while jumping, D.W. will do his cape move and lose the momentum from the jump, and if there's a pitfall, you're going down.

The graphics in the game are good, and so is the sound. The music is awesome, especially if you're a fan of the cartoon. The game isn't very long, but the level design is really well done, so it's short but sweet.

Capcom was planning to make a sequel to this game, but for some reason, it was cancelled. It's kind of a shame, because if they addressed some of the issues in this game, they could've made a great side scroller, but this is still a decent product that lives up to the Darkwing name
