User Rating: 8.9 | Makai Senki Disgaea PS2
Disgaea is a great game for two very good reasons. First, the story is decidedly different than most other games in the genre. Atlus decided on a complete role-reversal from the conventional “save the world” theme by providing you control of what would normally be considered the bad guys. The goal is simple: attempt complete domination. While this may paint a very dark picture, the game never takes itself very seriously, and spins the story and characters in humorous and entertaining directions. The second great thing about Disgaea is the gameplay. This game marks a very different strategy and feel from past SRPGs. There is a lot more flexibility and strategy that one can deploy in a single turn than any other game I’ve ever played. In a well-planned turn, one can expect almost all the enemies on a map destroyed before they even get the chance to react. In short, once you get the hang of things, you will find yourself manipulating the battle system to squeeze every ounce of productivity out of your turn and loving every minute of it. I honestly just can’t say enough good things about this game. Some may argue the graphics are sub-par. Well, they are…but so what? Who cares when a game is this much fun to play (rhetoric question)? I actually find the throwback to the PS1 graphic style charming. Good thing, because I am going to be pumping many hours into this game.
