A good attempt by SE to venture into the shooter genre while cashing in on the success of one of its most popular titles

User Rating: 8 | Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII PS2
This game seems more like Square Enix testing the waters of going into a different genre and using FFVII as a safety net for it not to drown. Honestly, this game is not bad for SE's first shooter and may have been just as good without the FFVII theme. The story was an ok but an unnecessary addition to the FFVII plot. It was good for it to expand on the past history of Vincent Valentine though since the original game gives very limited details about who he is and how he ended up in his current condition (but his mysterious nature is what kind of made him cool to begin with).

My breakdown:

What's Good:

- A variety of customizable weapons
- New interesting characters introduced to the FFVII world
- New twists and spins to the background of Vincent
- Old characters and enemies being rendered in PS2 format
- Being able to play as Vincent as the main character
- Vincent having the ability to transform
- Great bonus content via collecting all the "G-Reports"
- How SE immediately gives a reason why FFVII's two hidden characters where not seen in its CGI ending.

What's Not-So-Good:

- Vincent only has the Galient Beast transformation (and another that is part of the story) but none of his others from FFVII.

- Besides maybe Yuffie and Cait Sith, none of the other Avalanche members are all that relevant to the story.

- The story

What's Bad:

- I've seen other SE titles give us a lot more for our money on the PS2 when it comes to graphics.

In all, this is a fun game to play (especially if you are a FFVII fan) but you must go into it with a forgiving heart to appreciate it since this is SE's first FF based shooter.
