Probably one of the best Genesis games ever made.

Desert Strike was simple: shove you in an attack helicopter and send you off to blow stuff up. The formula worked up until the late nineties, but this is still pure classic gaming at it's finest.

Where do I start? You played the role of an unnamed Air Force pilot who is sent to stop a madman's nuclear attack on the U.S.A. He's got rocket launchers, heavy tanks, SCUDs, and a load of troops with him. Sounds good to me. First thing you'll notice: this game is VERY difficult. For example: to destroy an enemy airfield, first you have to destroy the madman's radar network, then blow up the heavily armored power plant to render him crippled. Go straight to the airfield, and expect to eat a Rapier missile in the face. Matter of fact, it will take about 3 to 4 tries to survive the first level. It's frusturating, but it's terrific fun once you actually get the hang of the chopper's controls and weapons.

You only get 3 weapons in the game: machine guns, Hydras (light rockets), and everybody's favorite explosive, the Hellfire. The helicopter itself has a fair bit of speed and great manuverability, but it's got terrible gas mileage. If you run out of ammo, you've got to find an ammunition box before you get shot to pieces. If you run out of gas, you crash and die. This is probably the difficult part.

But enough about that. The bottom line that it's fun to blow up that power plant. It's fun to rescue the hostages from the bad guys. It's fun to watch a little rifle-guy disintegrate after getting hit with a Hellfire. And that's why this game is so good. Graphics and sound? Meh. Not one of the strong points (Jungle Strike fixed that problem). So I recommend trying this game out. As soon as you get over dying, you'll see that this is one of the greatest games ever made by EA.
