Defiance: a game in the making, but not perfect yet

User Rating: 8.5 | Defiance PC
Defiance is a nice game. Different from many others we've all played. It does have a certain post apocalyptic charm of its own, but doesn't seem to have the tense, serious nature you'd expect. Being post apocalyptic, you'd expect shortages of everything, not true. There are vendors with anything the well meaning mercenary could ask for, at a price easy as pie to afford. Getting money from dead enemies happens regularly, and things like vehicles, always hard to get and keep in this setting, is too,too easy, since they give them to you for doing just a few missions. Don't like the color or type? No problem there are vendors that sell new machines with custom paint....in a post apocalyptic are??? Oh well, it seems Defiance is more flash than substance.

The biggest fun in Defiance is of course the Ark falls, they are, basically, space craft the fall from orbit and land nearby...quite nearby and in the SAME places every time. OK we understand that they're instances of a type, but they are so easy to figure out that some guys wait there, never leaving from that spot, or doing small side missions within sight of the area so they are first there when a new one appears. Getting to an Arkfall late makes little difference however. Shoot something, anything, and you'll get some kind of reward just for showing up, mostly guns of one type or another. So many guns that you can sell them at a vendor and in a few days be rushing around the world in a nice Charger....which they seem to think is a 4x4 since they have no more limitations than the quads we get for free, a more likely vehicle for this dead world.

The game is fun, and addicting in a sort of weird way. I'm hoping they will add new things that make it feel more post apocalyptic than now. The water in lakes and streams do look too sickly to drink, and some alien plants are better looking than ours are now. But the feeling that something you've never seen before going to jump/crawl/ or slither out at you never happens. Even robotic enemies are only seen in battles, and some cyborgs, that look just plain human. The game has a lot of possibilities left yet, lets hope that they'll change just enough to make it more realistic and less tedious especially during some if the instances where the most unlikely thing need to happen, like shooting the gas tank on the backs of flame wielding midgets, and because they run screaming to the EXACT same place every time...they become a weapon...good luck with that. Tedious and unnecessary, the boss is tough enough, just get on with it.

Even the cloths that we wear are free, and dont seem to wear out, at least to me. They also have no armor value, so wear whatever makes you look nice to you. You get those for free too, and even though everything is supposed to wear out, they do give you lots of time before you need to worry about it. In the time you'd wear out ...say a car...you'll get enough cash to buy 3, so theres never any worry of running out of anything except maybe ammo, which the enemies drop as well. So in conclusion, Defiance is nice fun game. Not my idea of post apocalyptic worlds, but fun for the young kids that I'm sure they are catering to, Since they expect free things and less realism, they certainly seem to get it here.
