Dead Space 3 falls flat on its face when it comes to survivor horror

User Rating: 5 | Dead Space 3 PS3
Dead Space 3 is not a horrible game, however it was advertised and put out there as a survivor horror game and I will be judging the game on whether or not it achieves that. in order to do that we must start from the beginning of the game. The game starts off in an open vast environment with blinding light. Hardly the things that horror games are made of. The first necromorph encounter you have is done through by a cut scene putting the new necromorph type up front on screen in broad daylight. It is not horrifying or even scary. Part of the reason for this is due to the fact that you have a machine gun with a full amo clip. You then do an awkward walling platforming section where you are scaling down a mountain side. This event is extremely awkward and does not feel like dead space. Within the first 10 min of playing the new dead space it is obvious that this is no longer a survival horror game but is instead an action shooter. The rest of the game is carried out in this manner. Vast open bright environments with way to many platforming sections. The game then jumps to the story of Isaac Clark. Isaac has moved on from his tormented mind and has completely moved on from Nicole and on to Elli, who has interned moved on to someone else. The tries to make you feel bad for Isaac who is caught up in this whole love triangle but this story feels like added weight and honestly feels stupid and trifling compared to the fact that they are being chased down by a ton of necros. By the time to game is done your happy just to hear that this stupid love story is over. Speaking of Elli her eye is returned to normal with no mention of the fact that it got gouged out in the second game. The main villain adds nothing to the story line other than some unnecessary shooter sections against regular humans with guns. This is another problematic thing that the game adds. These sections are no fun and rather annoying because once again this is not scary or even intense. The mechanics for these sections make it sometimes annoying when you are trying to do simple tasks. For instance there were many times when I went to hit my locator I would duck down instead of have my locator pop up. The other thing that I have a problem with is the new weapon system. Gone are the power nodes you used to upgrade your favorite weapons. Instead you now have to build your weapon from a work bench. This is tedious and doesn't fit well in the game. The new weapon system is not explained well at all. It takes a while before you find a weapon that you like and even then you don't want to experiment to find more for fear of losing your weapon that you finally made that works. When I was finessed with Dead Space 3 I had no desire to play through it again like I did with Dead Space 1 & 2. Dead Space 3 has little to no replay value. The new suit system isn't really rewarding for finding a new suit. Instead once you get the snow suit your pretty much good for the rest of the game. There are no reasons to upgrade to a new suit because new suits don't increase your health, stasis, etc. The new upgrade system falls flat on its face with little to no weight behind all of the upgrade circuits you collect. Taking into account all of these changes it is obvious that this is no longer a survival horror game and therefore fails, in my opinion.
