Yet More and More Complicated Ways to Monster Mash

User Rating: 9 | Dead Rising 2 PC
Dead Rising 2 is, in my eyes, Capcom's Zombie love-letter to it's fans. After years of Resident Evil, it was nice to see Capcom go left with the genre. In this game, the focus isn't Survival Horror or Gunplay- it's fitting as many Zombie onto the screen as you can, and how well your fisticuffs can keep you from being their dinner! This game is more like a great Arcade game than a solid release, but as far as the "Arcade-y" aspect of it goes, it hits it right in the skull with a hammer! Meeting up with a friend via co-op is seamless, and only doubles the amount of brain bashing fun you'll have. Don't expect an onion layered story- the only thing you need to know is that you were framed for starting the outbreak, and you are setting out to clear your name- all while collecting Zombrex to keep your daughter alive (should you choose to) and rescuing as many survivors as you can.

Pro's:
+Great action gameplay. There are "combo cards" to unlock, which lets you kick yet even more ass- in style!
+Tons of Zombies. Ohmygod, there are so many. I have a great PC rig, so I never had an issue with framerates or anything. One of my favorite things to do is find a safe place in heights, and look down among the ranks of the Undead. It also helps if you have a gun handy- you can make them crawl, dammit!
+The amount of weapons that you can build is not only great in amount, their great in creativity. There are some really cool, imaginative things you can slap together, and you unlock more and more combos as you progress.
+Can approach the game however you like. Want to be the good guy, and follow the story? Go ahead. Want to say fudge the world, and just go out and destroy things? Have at! The way you play this game is totally up to you, and aside from dying, failing this game is pretty hard to do.

Con's:
-The way the zombies respawn. I'm not a fan of it. You can fight your way through a whole hoarde, go into a door, then go back out, and the zombies have magically respawned. It's kinda annoying, seeing as how they went through so much trouble packing all the zombies onscreen- a little continuity and a more realistic respawn timer would have made this golden.
-The Map. It was cool... at first. But it got a little old to look at. Foodcourt, mall area, outside, casino, casino, casino, new casino being built- it got kind of monotonous. But, what was there was very well detailed- that's worth something!
-No female player characters. This is easily remedied by the lovely "Chuck is a Chick' mod. Capcom has always positively represented female characters in their games (especially Resident Evil), I was surprised they didn't have a female player in this title (the first game, I could understand).
-No sandbox mode. Not entirely true- let the little girl die. But some people have a real moral dilemma with that, so to each their own.

Overall:
There were times I was playing this game, and I felt like it was Crazy Taxi with Zombie- myself being the taxi. But after not playing it for a while, I got the urge to sink my teeth back into it, and I still had just as much fun the second time through as I did the first time through- which is a rare thing! I haven't even played the story yet- that's how much fun I've had with this game. It's fun alone, but if you have a friend, this game really shines in co-op! If you like zombie games, and don't mind the lack of a story, I highly recommend Dead Rising 2 for all your monster mashing needs!
