First off let me say I don't hate Square, or Enix or the PS2. I loved the original (Secret of Mana), and I keep hoping they make a good one. Every time another one comes out, there I go running to the store like a blind fool. Plunking down money hoping to buy a game that's as least as good as the original. I even ignored the reviews on Legend of Mana and Sword of Mana, hoping I would like them too.

The story is the same claptrap you've mashed buttons through dozens of times. The orchestral music is ok, but doesn't fit the game really well. The voiceovers are bad as well. The graphics are decent for the PS2, but you'll be too busy going nuts trying to keep your character moving in a straight line to take notice.

The camera, control and targetting issues are what really killed this game for me. You'll be constantly adjusting the camera with the right analog stick and getting beat on until you can finally see the enemies you're trying to kill. If you're younger and haven't fought with a camera system in a 3D game for the 2,983,749th time, then you might be able to plow through this just to see how the story ends, but I couldn't.

Come on Squeenix. You have a lot more money than you did in 1993. Stop handing the Mana franchise over to your less experienced development teams in your organization and make at least ONE Mana game that's better than the one you made almost 15 years ago.

Here's hoping that the DS Mana game coming out later this year can make up for the other letdowns.
