Take Zelda's puzzle dungeons and God of war's combat, and you have the interesting and fun mix that is Darksiders.

While I'm not a huge God of War fan, I am a VERY HUGE fan of the Zelda games. I love the puzzle dungeon gameplay formula and Darksiders does this almost as well as a AAA Zelda game. The combat is easy and entertaining, basically taken from God of War for the most part.

The difficulty is a problem for me though. Most of the game feels very easy on normal settings, but every now and then you get stuck in a room full of mosters with unblockable attacks. When in a small room this can feel very cheap and very frustrating. What's even more frustrating is that you go through this annoying battle just to meet the boss of that level and it's a freaking cake walk compared to the room before it. This makes the whole tension of the boss fight fall apart.

The weapons and powers you gain are very similar to most action beat 'em ups in that you unlock new weapons and level up their powers from different colored orbs (or souls in this game) you get from killing enemies. The combat is fluid and feels easy to learn. The blocking and dashing being on the same button does get really annoying though in crowded fights.

Unlocking new stuff to get through the dungeons, however, is where the game really shines for me. I love getting new gear to open up a new set of doors you couldn't access earlier in the game. It's a very addictive and fun way to explore any level in most of these style of games.

There is even a nod to Panzer Dragoon Orta when you fly on the back of an angel's creature and do a little rail shooting for good measure.

The graphics are good (except for the bad character designs) and the voice acting is fair enough. I don't like the art style and it prevents the game from feeling as serious and atmospheric as it could have or even should have. Technically everything looks ok, but for such a serious tone, the game should have used a more dark and serious visual style.

Basically I'm just a really huge fan of how much of this game feels like a darker version of a Zelda game. The mechanics, level designs, gear you unlock, all of it feels very similar to what makes Zelda games so great and for this reason more than any other I am so far finding the game to be very fun. I just wish the Boss fights were not so darn easy compared to other, much more cheap feeling fights half way through the levels.

Rent it for sure, if you like Zelda games i'd say go buy it now.
