Dark Void Zero is an homage to retro platforming that delivers.

User Rating: 8 | Dark Void Zero DS
Dark Void Zero gives you exactly what it sets out to. As an 8-bit platformer that never was released, this DSi download is an excellent example of late-'80s/early-90's 8-bit platforming.

There's not much depth to this game. Three stages where you run, jump, fly, and shoot your way through hordes of aliens while searching for card keys that will allow you to advance to the next portion of the game. Along the way, you can pick up new weapons that give varying levels of speed versus power to knock down your foes. At the end of each stage there's a boss battle that isn't entirely challenging, but does add a slightly different aspect of variety to the overall gameplay.

There is a forgettable plot in this game that doesn't impact the overall experience one way or another.

This game is a tried and true homage to 8-bit platforming and the real magic is in the replayability. You can probably get through the game on Normal difficulty in about 30-45 minutes, but game-length was never a true attribute in this genre. Rather, the true challenge is tackling the harder difficulties and attempting to find all of the 100 power orbs and 5 special items in each of the stages, all the while killing baddies to 'shoot' for the high score. (An online scoreboard would have been nice.)

All in all, a very enjoyable game, especially for its $5 price tag.
