Cybernator is Awesome!

If you are a fan of early 90s 2D shooters, get this game! If you are just looking for a solid, fun game to add to your virtual console collection, you can't do much better than Cybernator.

Cybernator can be compared to Contra 3 in terms of production quality, but other than being a Konami shooter, there is little else to compare the two.
Cybernator puts you in the seat of a futuristic mech fighting a civil war across Earth space. Cybernator has a standard space opera story, but the action is totally original. This was the first game I can remember that had destructible environments. The combat is pretty good, although the aiming feels a bit slow at times, but they game gives you the ability to hold your gun in a fixed position if it makes things easier. The control options are amazing for a game in this era. They include Fire, shield button, Dash, Jump (hold for limited booster for short flight), a gun position lock, and weapon switch. Your default gun is the Vulcan cannon machine gun, and a melee punch. You can collect power ups along the way to upgrade your cannon, and you will also find additional weapons like missiles and lasers. The game is rather difficult at first, but after a few continues I was back into like it was 1993.

Visually, this is one of the nicest looking games ever to make it to the SNES. The background art work is amazingly colorful and original. The enemies are all nicely designed too, and there is tons of detail everywhere. When you destroy and enemy mech, the pilot can be seen running away. This is a nice touch because it gives you a good sense of how big your mech really is. Firing your gun is neat too. Shell casings pop out of your gun as you fire, and most surfaces show battle marks when hit by your bullets. The special effects are pretty good too with a lot of mode7 action to keep you happy.

This game is just great, I'm so glad nintendo choose to bring this to the virtual console. I hope a lot more people get to experience this diamond in the rough.
