So having just finished the Crysis 2 campaign on normal difficulty I have to say it was an impressive thrill ride that was not short of intense action movie moments and eye-watering graphical accomplishments. This being said after actually playing the game I feel like the crytek team played it pretty safe by not actually bringing anything new to the table. For instance Alcatraz's abilities are the same from the first crysis and one could even say slightly watered down (max speed and power mode are gone) leaving you with a simple two options of armour mode and camouflage mode. Though Alcatraz also has the ability to upgrade his abilities by collecting currency from fallen alien enemies it largely feels unnecessary as I was able to complete the campaign rarely using the upgrades. This is not to say that this cutting down on abilities hinders the game as all that was necessary from the first crysis is definitely here and there are many aspects that have been improved upon including a more streamlined level design reminiscent of something like Halo 3. And indeed after playing crysis 2 my impression is that this is what the bungie team was trying to accomplish with their milking of the Halo series. Nevertheless crysis stands apart as a fun game that is visceral in giving its player tactical options of choosing before a fight whether or not they will go balls to wall with a fire fight, or sneak by using the handy and extremely cheap camouflage. By the way if you haven't played the game what makes the experience most enjoyable is the fantastic graphics, they are the best I've seen on the 360 and considering the console is 6 years old it is nice to see that there is still life in its graphical processor. As I said what hinders the game from achieving perfection is its fear to venture into the unknown something which I look for in these sci-fi action games.
Ultimately I managed to beat the game in a week without having my parents complain that I wasn't out looking for a job. So rent it first I guess and because this is solely a review of the single player you will probably find it quite easy to get through. But really its fun while it lasts and while it isn't overly ambitious with its gameplay its competent controls and content (I only experienced a few mild bugs) the graphical prowess is not to be missed on the 360.
