Bugs hold it back, but this mini masterpiece is well worth playing if you enjoy survival horror or adventure games.

User Rating: 8 | Cryostasis PC
Gamespots review of Cryostasis is dead on, but anyone looking for a second opinion would do well to ignore the under appreciative views of other mainstream sites such as say IGN, and just go ahead and take the plunge. In most of the reviews, the main criticisms of the game are certainly apparent, but the true strengths of the game are not. Anyone looking for the next action oriented survival horror game will most likely not find what they are looking for here. However, those looking for a superb story and a brutally intense tension that tightens its grip as the game progresses will find alot to like with Cryostasis.

And really tension is a great word to describe Cryostasis. From the intro, to the final (might I add beautiful) climax, this game never lets up on the suspense and its all the better for it. This feat is achieved from many aspects, but one of its biggest contributors are its difficult and supremely creepy enemies. Unlike other modern survival horror games, you generally only fight one enemy at a time. This lets the developers create truly intense encounters that start off fairly simple in the early stages of the game, but eventually escalate into full blown panic scrambles that are extremely rewarding to overcome. The game's secret is actually a simple one. If you want to make something truly scary, then the prospect of death needs to be very real and constantly reminded. Dying is something that will happen often, and whether its from the combat, the environmental hazards, or one of the many playable cutscenes, its always scary.

Explaining how this game has a wonderful story, and a unique atmosphere would really be rather pointless. It has already been stated in GS review so I will simply end this with one more statement. Anyone that can appreciate intelligently crafted horror, not just splatter fests, would do well to check this title out.
