User Rating: 9 | Crimsonland PC
Crimsonland, published by 10 tons and produced by Reflexive entertainment, the same folks who brought you Swarm, is an intense, intuitive, actionpacked gorefest with a nostalgic twist and over 25 hours entertainment on a budget. Featuring over 20 unique, imaginative weapons and 40 super power-esqe "perks", Crimsonland puts you in the shoes of an unnamed badass gunsligner who is being inexplicably assaulted by endless hordes of zombies, aliens, spiders, lizards, and ghouls. Story is does not play a big part in Crimsonland. The game is played in three main modes, being Quest, Rush, and Survival. Im Quest mode, you play through pre-set scenarios to unlock new weapons and perks, such as rocket launchers and the ability to slowly regain health on your own. The latest registered version of theg ame has 50 levels, and although you'll be able to get through said 50 levels in less than ten hours, the HARDCORE mode you'll unlock after level 5.10 will easily last you another 10, if your an expert palyer. Rush mode pits you against an impossible flood of enemies, and arms you with an assault rifle with an infinite clip. you must survive as long as possible, although high scores seem to be measured in hundreths of seconds, once you pass a half a minute. Survival mode lets you fight a slower paced onslaught of foes, as you level up to earn 'Perks' and colelct new and better weaponry. Playing through Quest mode unlocks weapons and perks for survival mode. The gameplay is intuitive, and intense. Controlling your character's movement, top-down, is done with the w,a,s,d keys, and aiming is controlled by the mouse, like in many first-person shooters. various powerups can be colelcted, some of them especially useful, such as a chain-reaction 'ion bolt' or a nuclear warhead. My dry description of the game mechanics does not do justice to the extremely fast-paced, thrilling gameply. Though a mission may not last you mroe than a few minutes in quest mode, the sheer intensity of them will keep you coming back for more, and the game has over 100 levels, all in all. Featuring online scoreboards (though, sadly, no online play) and some truely exciting gameplay, you can't go wrong with crimsonland, considering it's budget pricetag. This game will last you longer than many of the more modern First-person shooters, thanks to the sheer volume of levels, and minimalistic system requirements makes the game extra juicy for those on lower-end systems, although by all means those with high-end rigs should give the game a shot, despite it's dated (but clear) graphical style.
